The Flyers signed forward Dan Carcillo today to a 1-year contract, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Carcillo will earn $1.075 million in 2010-11.
“We are happy to have Dan under contract for the 2010-11 season,” Holmgren said in a statement about the 6-foot, 205-pound left winger.
Carcillo's signing puts the Flyers approximately $2.497 million over the league's $59.4 million salary cap. Holmgren will have until the regular season begins on Oct. 7 to pare the roster back down to fit the cap.
Carcillo, 25, had 12 goals, 10 assists and a team-high 207 penalty minutes in 76 regular-season games this past season. He led the team in hits with 194. He also became the first player, alongside Boston Bruins’ forward Shawn Thornton, to be assessed a fighting major in the NHL’s Winter Classic, on Jan. 1, 2010.
Carcillo originally filed for salary arbitration last week before agreeing to this deal.

My beef with Flyers brass is they continue to sign numerous 12-15 goal scorers year after year, low production, who seem to fall asleep come playoff time. There has not been a bonafide scoring threat-type player (or two) on this team in quite awhile. A handful of low-scoring players along with a few bonafide tough guys won't win the cup, ever. - Great signing. Carcillo is not a goon, he's a pest. I love having a guy in orange&black that's always yapping at the opposition. Goons intimidate via size and fisticuffs. Pest's have been known to bring opposing players to near tears with their unrelenting rhetoric, just ask Keith Jones. I hated guys like Barnaby and Tucker always getting into the Flyers' heads and wished we had our own mouthpiece...Carcillo can skate, he can play, he drops the gloves, and I love watching him get under the other team's skin. - Jody Shelley is on this team because Bougaard is on the NYR and Eric Goddard is on the Pens. Caricllo DREW the 2nd most penalties in the league last season. If you don't want fighters on your team, you are cheering for the wrong team. Flyer hockey is tough hockey. It's been a month since we lost in Game 6 of the Finals and people are all over Homer already. Apprantly the bandwagon is losing some folks. - I like Car Bomb and I think his teammates really like him too so I think it's a good signing as long as it's not much more than 1 mil. All these pieces are going to add up to a team that's awesome to watch and nobody wants to play against. Unfortunately we still have no goalie :-(. For those complain about skill players: Briere, Giroux, Carter, Richards, Zherdev, Leino, JVR, Timmo, Pronger, Carle. Any skill there? Throw in the dirty goals from a hopefully more-sober-than-last-season Hartnell and Carcillo and this team should have no trouble scoring goals. Why on God's green earth do people want Stonehands Powe on this team??? That guy couldn't put the puck in the ocean if he was in the middle of it on a raft. Ya he can skate, but Noodle did as much AND can actually score and Lappy will be back killing penalties this season...and why the love affair with Asham? Ya he did ok, but Carcillo is younger/faster/dumber and has better facial hair!!! Agreed COMPLETELY on the Shelley signing...confusing...still hoping for Gags & Bouch for Quick & Simmons...doubtful, but still hoping!!!
