Flyers sign Carcillo to 1-year deal

POSTED: Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 2:16 PM

The Flyers signed forward Dan Carcillo today to a 1-year contract, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Carcillo will earn $1.075 million in 2010-11.

“We are happy to have Dan under contract for the 2010-11 season,” Holmgren said in a statement about the 6-foot, 205-pound left winger.

Carcillo's signing puts the Flyers approximately $2.497 million over the league's $59.4 million salary cap. Holmgren will have until the regular season begins on Oct. 7 to pare the roster back down to fit the cap.

Carcillo, 25, had 12 goals, 10 assists and a team-high 207 penalty minutes in 76 regular-season games this past season. He led the team in hits with 194. He also became the first player, alongside Boston Bruins’ forward Shawn Thornton, to be assessed a fighting major in the NHL’s Winter Classic, on Jan. 1, 2010.

Carcillo originally filed for salary arbitration last week before agreeing to this deal.

Regardless of whether you are for against the signing, Carcillo's name will be etched on Lord Stanley's Cup in 2011. BOOK IT.

I was fine with bringing back Carcillo until they signed Shelley. I'm not sure what Lavvy is going to do with 2 guys who they don't want to dress when they go deep into the playoffs. Asham can play in all situations and provide points. That is who I would've put the money towards.

Nice to see Big Tom peeled himself away from eating glue to add his wisdom to the message boards...

icarus Oh boy! The Flyer with the biggest Zebra bulls-eye on his jersey is back for another season of game-changing penalties. Maybe Mr. H. can trade Gagne to the Rangers for Sean Avery and the Flyers could have their own real-life Hanson brothers line. Hell, don't even need to make a trade. Just bring up Cote.

Why not Asham over this idiot.... Now we get to look forward to another season of him averaging over 1 penalty per game...

Dear Mr. Homer, Now that Carcillo is signed, please promptly trade him elsewhere. Thank you very much.

Why sign Shelley and Carcillo? I'd rather invest in Asham! I still think every team needs one tough guy but now we got two who hurt us more with bad penalties instead of scoring opportunities!
