Draft recap from LA

Frequent Flyers is live in Los Angeles on Day 2 of the NHL Draft.

LOS ANGELES – What started as an extremely quiet NHL Draft on Friday night for the Flyers pretty much ended the same way on Saturday.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren met with a few general managers at the start of Day 2's Rounds 2-7, including Sharks GM Doug Wilson, and worked the phone a few times. Ultimately, Holmgren did not pull the trigger on any deals that will impact the 2010-11 Flyers roster.

On Day 2, the Flyers made just a small deal in the 7th round to send the rights of forward Jon Matsumoto, an unrestricted free agent, to Carolina for a 7th round pick.

In all, the Flyers packed up and left the West Coast with six new prospects in their organization. Here's a recap of the day's happenings:

At No. 89 overall, the Flyers selected:

MICHAEL CHAPUT
Previous team: Lewiston MAINEiacs (QMJHL)
Hometown: Ile Bizard, Quebec (suburb of Montreal)
Position: Center
Age: 04-09-1992 (18)
Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 194 lbs.
Notable stats / accolades: 65 points in 97 career games in the QMJHL, 28 goals and 27 assists this season.

Chaput said he spoke with 10 or 12 teams in interviews prior to the draft, but none of them were the Flyers. He spoke to his hometown Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs but was surprised to be picked by the Flyers.

"I didn't talk to the Flyers before the draft or anything, so it was quite a bit of a surprise," Chaput said. "I'm still kind of nervous. Every time there was a team picking, my heart was beating. I'm a little shocked but I'm also relieved.

Chaput said his game resembles Vancouver's Alex Burrows.

"I can bring energy and a lot of work to this team," Chaput said. "I'm pretty much an energy guy. I'm also able to score some goals, so maybe a 3rd line guy that can also bring some goals. [Burrows] is a go-go guy, never stops, also brings an offensive side."

This past year was his rookie season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Chaput admitted he learned a lot about the speed of the game.

"With the speed and the size of the guys, you have a second less to think," Chaput said. "I bet it's even worse and harder in the NHL. The speed of the game, you've got to adjust quickly to that. If I had the choice, I'd go [to the NHL] next year, but if I had to set some time, I'd say maybe 3-to-4 years [I'll be in the NHL]."

At No. 119 overall, the Flyers selected:

TYE MCGINN
Previous team: Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)
Hometown: Fergus, Ontario
Position: Left Wing
Age: 07-29-1990 (19)
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 195 lbs.
Notable stats / accolades: McGinn posted 62 points in 50 games with the Olympiques this year.

Also, Delaware County native JIMMY MULLIN, who attended Shattuck St. Mary's HS this year in Minnesota, was picked just before McGinn at No. 118 by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ed Barkowitz wrote a story on draft hopeful Mullin in Friday's Daily News. Here is a link on Mullin.

At No. 149 overall, the Flyers picked:

MICHAEL PARKS
Previous team: Cedar Rapids Roughriders (USHL)
Hometown: O'Fallon, Missouri
Position: Right Wing
Age: 02/15/1992 (18)
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 184 lbs.
Notable stats / accolades: In his rookie season with Cedar Rapids, Parks posted 11 goals and 11 assists in 51 games with 57 penalty minutes.

With the No. 179 overall selection, the Flyers picked:

NICK LUUKKO
Previous team: The Gunnery (Connecticut)
Hometown: West Chester, PA
Position: Defense
Age: 11/1991 (18)
Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 190 lbs.
Notable stats/accolades: Just graduated from Gunnery Prep in Connecticut, heading to Dubuque of the USHL next season. Luukko, the son of Flyers president Peter Luukko, was rated as a B level prospect by NHL Central Scouting earlier this season. Will attend University of Vermont in Fall, 2011.

Early in the 7th round, the Flyers traded the rights to Phantoms forward Jon Matsumoto – a player who had led the team in scoring over the past two seasons – to Carolina for pick No. 206 overall. Matsumoto is a restricted free agent.

So, with that No. 206 overall pick, the Flyers selected:

RICARD BLIDSTRAND
Previous team: AIK (Swedish Juniors)
Hometown: Stockholm, Sweden
Position: Defense
Age: 4/20/1992 (18)
Height: 6-foot-1
Weight: 191 lbs.
Notable stats / accolades: In 33 games with AIK's top junior team, Blidstrand netted two goals and 6 assists for 8 points. From EliteProspects.com: "A big and strong defenseman. Plays determined and can play physical in his own end, but should do it more frequently. Moves the puck well and has a very good shot from the point. Passing game is a bit suspect as well as his decision making at times."

Then, with the Flyers' last pick in the draft, at No. 209 overall (second to last):

BRENDAN RANFORD
Previous team: Kamloops Blazers (WHL)
Hometown: Edmonton, Alberta
Position: Left Wing
Age: 5/3/1992 (18)
Height: 5-foot-9
Weight: 182
Notable stats / accolades: Ranford had a really strong season in the Western Hockey League, posting 65 points (29 goals and 36 assists) in 72 regular season games for the Blazers. He is undersized but could be someone to watch as he continues to mature.
