Flyers get Hamhuis from Predators
The Flyers have traded defenseman Ryan Parent back to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the rights to defenseman Dan Hamhuis and a conditional draft pick in 2011.
Hamhuis can be a free agent July 1, meaning the Flyers now have exclusive negotiating rights with him until them.
“Obviously, our intention is to get him signed prior to that date and that is what our aim is at this point in time,” added general manager Paul Holmgren said. “The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better.”
Hamhuis, 27, recorded 24 points (5 goals, 19 assists) and 49 penalty minutes in 78 regular-season games with Nashville in 2009-10. He also posted two assists and two penalty minutes in six games of the Western Conference quarterfinal series with Chicago.
"Dan Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman,” said Holmgren. “He has been in Nashville since his draft year. He's a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties. He is another athlete we'd like to add to our team to continue to improve our defense."
In six full seasons of play in the NHL, all with the Predators, Hamhuis has compiled 32 goals and 129 assists for 161 points and 375 penalty minutes in 483 regular season games, in addition to nine points (1G,8A) and 18 penalty minutes in 28 career playoff games. He was a first-round pick in 2001.
"Obviously it is sad to leave the Predators. I spent some great years with them and it is great organization to be a part of,” said Hamhuis. “I've heard nothing but great things about the city of Philadelphia and the Flyers.
"I think Philly has an unbelievable defensive core,” added Hamhuis. “To join a core like that makes the Flyers one of the tougher ones in the league. To play against the teams from the East, the conference has a lot of great forwards, and watching the playoffs, having a great defense will get you a long way.”
Parent was acquired by the Flyers as part of the Peter Forsberg trade with Nashville.
"I think Ryan is a good kid,” said Holmgren. “He is an extremely hard worker. We certainly thank him for his services and his time here. He has a lot of upside as a player and he is going back to an organization that obviously knows him because they drafted him."
bsbullie...I agree 1000%%.. the flyers were 1 Dman and 1 save from winning the cup.....a "heavy weight" does nothing but take up roster space.....it's time to root for the Flyers..and put the "bullies" to bed hospodar

Great move and major upgrade on D. Now we have to dump salary to fit him in, so I think it's possible we may lose Carter for Bobby Ryan and stick with Leighton/Boosh in net -or- try to get Quick or Bernier and picks. It's a shame we're so loaded with centers and he's the odd man out but the problem could certainly be worse. Kanayd- Everyone except Romus seems to forget Mike Testwuide. He's got size and hopefully cracks the lineup immediately. He'll fill in for Asham if we can't keep him. I think Asham is a good depth player with a lot of experience and a big team guy, would like to see him again in the orange and black. I am wondering how much Hamhuis will be making, and the goalie situation may involve one of the other d-men, maybe even Timonen.
Comment removed.
Makes you wonder what would have happened if Homer had pulled of this deal at the deadline, and we were able to roll all the way through the playoffs with Hamhuis shouldering some of the minutes (that Parent couldn't handle) that were clearly gassing Pronger and TImonen at the end of the run... SAG1015- Hamhuis is solid--Parent is not (not yet, anyway). Advantage Holmgren. Plus he picked up a draft pick, something he hasn't done in a couple of years. All is forgiven Paulie. I'd love to see Derek Boogaard in a Flyers uniform, even if it is just for 60 games a year for three minutes a game. Dress him against the Leafs, Pens, Rangers, Devils, Blues, teams with certified super-heavyweights. Someone needs to smack down Colton Orr once and for all.
GNIKGNARLY Now move Carter for Dustin Brown and Jonathon Brenier, then replace Asham with a much bigger heavy weight as the tough guy and we're BACK in the FINALS next spring. 1st, it is 2010. The Flyers got to the finals without a heavyweight. How many fights did you see the ENTIRE play-offs, any team? 1 or 2? And they were spur of the moment kind of fights. 2nd, maybe the Kings will throw in their 1st born son with that deal. If Holmgren could somehow get Bernier and a pick for Carter I'd be thrilled. But if he could wrangle away Dustin Brown, their captain who played on the 1st line for Team USA, Homer himself can sing God Bless America before the games. And Aaron Asham, while not my favorite player, was the only legit scoring threat in Game 2 and played a great series. And bsbullie, Bernier by all accounts isn't just some prospect, he is the real deal, just blocked by Quick. I'd pull the trigger on that deal before the kings realize it's a bad idea. richards4captain18
LOL @ TBA's sign-and-trade the Foot-of-Doom idea. :) Flyskippy
Hey Patrick Division, different pronunciation --- but I was always a big Karl Dykhuis fan! NYFlyersFan
Solid move, parent isnt ever gonna me much of a player, that's pretty apparent to anyone alive awake and paying attention (not primo however). Good upgrade. They need a few more of those. ctowm
Great Deal! kolocop
