Flyers to Waive Jones

Randy Jones will be waived at some point this weekend.

The Daily News has confirmed through a team source that the Flyers will indeed waive defenseman Randy Jones at some point this weekend. The move did not take place by today’s noon deadline but can take place at any time, though it does not become effective until noon the following day.

Jones has been a target of speculation since he did not live up to the 2-year, $6 million extension he signed after the 2007-08 season. His $2.75 million cap hit was an expensive one for the Flyers to swallow in his hip injury-riddled campaign last season when he only played in 47 games.

“Waiver rumors are waiver rumors,” Jones said after today’s skate at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees. “It hasn’t happened so why think about it. Until it happens, that’s the only reaction I’d be able to give.”

Jones added: “I’m not nervous at all. I haven’t talked to [Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren] at all.”

The plan would be for the Flyers to send Jones to the Phantoms, where he could play if he is not claimed by a team within 24 hours. Rumors have the New York Rangers interested in Jones’ services, though they too are hamstrung by the cap.

If the Rangers – or any team – decide to take Jones on his way down to the Phantoms, they would be responsible for his entire salary for the year. If they wait and take him on re-entry waivers back into the NHL, the two teams would split Jones’ cap hit for the season.

More in tomorrow’s Daily News.

I better see the skilled players instead of the goons. Carcillo is fine as a 4th line center and lone enforcer. If I see Cote and Asham make it, over Pyraola and JVR, I'm done with the Flyers. The game has changed and I'm sick of seeing the penalties. As much as I love the rough stuff, I'm sick of watching skilled players around the league making the Flyers look stupid. Homer...Enough.

like the move... if it happens. clears up some cap space and should be able to pull these lines: 1) gagne-richards-giroux 2) hartnell-carter-briere 3) pyorala-laperriere-jvr 4) carcillo-powe-asham w/ betts as an extra man ... timmo-coburn, pronger-carle, parent-tollefson with syvrt as the extra

Jones is terrible, always the last one in the play even in the defensive zone, too many give aways, and way to slow. looking forward to the start of the season, 3 solid D pairings and 3 solid lines with a good 4th also. Emery looks great so far in the preseason. How nice is it to have a goalie that can actually go from post to post?

How could this possibly bite the Flyers Hammer? Have you watched Jones play the last 2 years? They need the cap room NOW

I think "he stinks" is being a bit harsh. Yes, he's overpaid to be a 6th d-man on the Flyers, but on many teams he'd be a #3 or #4 and would probably fit in fine. Yes - he had a bad season last year with give aways in his zone, but so did several other players. Just look at the change one season can make (i.e. Brad Lidge). Re-entry waivers were part of the last CBA. Any player on a minor league making more than $75,000 who is called back up to the parent club must clear these waivers. If claimed, the parent club and the new team split the salary cap hit. In this instance, the Rangers could claim him if waived right away and take the full cap hit. If they gamble and wait to see if the Flyers recall him, then they could claim him and take the half hit. If the Flyers leave him on the Phantoms after clearing the initial waivers, no other team can claim him until the Flyers (if they) call him back up this season.
