Flyers to Waive Jones
The Daily News has confirmed through a team source that the Flyers will indeed waive defenseman Randy Jones at some point this weekend. The move did not take place by today’s noon deadline but can take place at any time, though it does not become effective until noon the following day.
Jones has been a target of speculation since he did not live up to the 2-year, $6 million extension he signed after the 2007-08 season. His $2.75 million cap hit was an expensive one for the Flyers to swallow in his hip injury-riddled campaign last season when he only played in 47 games.
“Waiver rumors are waiver rumors,” Jones said after today’s skate at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees. “It hasn’t happened so why think about it. Until it happens, that’s the only reaction I’d be able to give.”
Jones added: “I’m not nervous at all. I haven’t talked to [Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren] at all.”
The plan would be for the Flyers to send Jones to the Phantoms, where he could play if he is not claimed by a team within 24 hours. Rumors have the New York Rangers interested in Jones’ services, though they too are hamstrung by the cap.
If the Rangers – or any team – decide to take Jones on his way down to the Phantoms, they would be responsible for his entire salary for the year. If they wait and take him on re-entry waivers back into the NHL, the two teams would split Jones’ cap hit for the season.

This is good news! Especially the fact that they don't have to send talented players down because of salary cap issues. Jones is a decent offensive player. Wonder what would have happened if they tried to put him on the wing. Oh well.... getting pumped for the season! sima_down_nah

88, what good would that do? There's only one year left on his deal and it would be a downgrade to the roster for no significant bonus. The Flyers wouldn't waive Jones because he's a terrible liability on the ice (he's not), they would waive him because 1) his spot on the roster (6th D) doesn't command his salary, 2) they could get similar enough production from someone else for much less (Danny Syvret), and 3) they could fit more depth guys and call-ups under the cap and avoid a replay of something like the Scottie Upshall trade again this year. conceptual_bro
I have been waiting for this news since 2006 Flyers420
Frank, I think Jones' cap number is only 2.5. It's based on the average salary over the length of the contract. To say that he hasn't lived up to the deal is a bit unfair. Better players have simply bumped him down the depth chart since he signed (Pronger, Carle, Parent) and his spot isn't worth his salary (which was too steep to begin with). He played very well in the 2008 playoff run but he was really banged up this year, too. conceptual_bro
Jones hasn't been the same since his suspension last season for that hit on Bergeron. Zeb
88 you can't eat a salary know with the salary cap. remembr last year and the year before when they had mid and end season trade issues because they had no room under the salary cap. If you can fit two good up and coming players instead of one player who is not living up to his contract why not waive him. streetjustice
He gives the puck away in his own zone too much anyway. I can't stand Randy Jones, and if you want an offensive D-man I'd rather keep Syvret up anyway. HandNik- The worst thing that ever happened to Randy Jones' career here was signing that contract. It brought way more attention to his game and you couldn't help but notice that he is at best a 5th defenseman in this league- and you can't have #5 dmen taking up 2.5 in cap room. Good for him that he got his money, but this should have been done last year. duffers
This is a no-brainer. Waive him. I'd rather have Syvret in the lineup. rwright611
I understand waiving him and sending him to the Phantoms. What exactly are "re-entry waivers back in to the NHL"? Would that be if they decided to call him back up? Would he have to go through waivers again and someone could claim him? I'm not concerned about losing him, I'm just wondering why a team would claim and take on the full salary, when they could just as easily claim him and only take on half. uncle meat
