Flyers summon Tye McGinn

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): Flyers confirm Rinaldo will be out a minimum of one week with a "thigh laceration," also confirming McGinn call-up.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tye McGinn's stay with the Flyers during training camp did not last as long as he had hoped. With the season rapidly approaching, the Flyers sent McGinn - a 4th round pick in 2010 - back to AHL Adirondack last Wednesday.

Less than a week later, McGinn is back.

As reported by the Glens Falls Post-Star, McGinn was summoned back to Philadelphia on Sunday night after the Phantoms' shootout win against Albany in Atlantic City.

McGinn, 22, could be a candidate to replace Zac Rinaldo, who required 20 stitches in his quadriceps area after being cut by an errant skate on Sunday against the Sabres, in the Flyers' lineup on Tuesday night in New Jersey.

Jody Shelley and Tom Sestito were healthy scratches on Sunday.

Tuesday night would mark McGinn's NHL debut. He has 23 goals and 10 assists in 96 career AHL games. McGinn is known as a tireless worker on the forecheck who has developed a net presence, which is something the Flyers sorely lacked in their opening games.

The Flyers' brass was pleased with his abbreviated training camp showing.

"We got a chance to look at Tye McGinn, who we were really happy with," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said last Friday. "I think if we were to get into a situation where we needed someone to call up, he could come up and play."

Rinaldo would likely need to be added to the short-term injury list to make room on the 23-man roster. He was having trouble walking as he left First Niagara Center on Sunday.

If the Flyers added Danny Briere (wrist) to the short-term injury list last week, Briere will not be eligible to play until Saturday at the earliest. Holmgren said it was possible that the team would list him on the non-roster portion of the reserve list, which would enable him to return sooner if possible. Briere, who is a point-per-game player against both Buffalo and Pittsburgh as a Flyer, missed both games this weekend but was expected to skate on his own.

McGinn's older brother, Jamie, who plays for the Colorado Avalanche, tweeted congratulations on Sunday night.

The Flyers are off on Monday, before boarding a bus to head to North Jersey in preparation for the Devils.
