The Flyers have signed right wing Wayne Simmonds to a 2-year contract extension, the team announced. The deal is valued at $1.75 million per year.

Simmons, 22, was acquired with forward Brayden Schenn and a second-round pick in the 2012 draft from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for center Michael Richards.

Simmonds recorded 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points. He has appeared in 240 games for the Kings over the past three seasons (2008-11), during which time he’s scored a total of 39 goals and 54 assists for 93 points while collecting 264 PIM.

Pretty good numbers for a guy who likes to mix it up. Definitely an upgrade from Carcillo.

An upgrade in goals/points YES. He is not better in the mix it up/instigator department then Carcillo. A guy that fights with his visor still on is not a fighter or winner IMO, thus points are still more important.

ANYBODY that is willing to mix it up is an upgrade over Carcillo. When has Carcillo ever been taken seriously by anybody???? When has he won a fight???? A 22 year old 14 goal scorer can easily become a 24 year old 20 goal scorer...a number Carcillo can only dream of.

I liked carbomb, the problem he had is if he looked at another player the wrong way, the refs would give him a 2, 5 and a 10. Marked men have no place on the flyers, This team is marked enough from the 70's.

This guy will be a fan favorite for years and has 20-25 goal potential. A reasonable contract for the Flyers.

09-10 Season he posted 16 goals & 24 assists in 78 games...40 points...not bad for a 3rd-4th line player on the Kings....this kid had some talent...and definitely an upgrade over Carcillo who posted career bests in 09-10 of 12 goals & 10 assists in 78 games for the Flyers...a whopping 22 pts!! In case anyone did not notice...the Refs had it out for Carcillo as well...he was a target every time he was on the ice.....

Big young power forwards can take time to develop their scoring touch. Anybody remember John Leclair?

he's 22, so yes, he can still develop...but more of a bigger Rick Tochett style player...and I agree, the fan will love this kid!
