Flyers lacking heart through first third

POSTED: Saturday, February 16, 2013, 11:11 PM

MONTRÉAL -- Captain Claude Giroux called out his teammates for “going through the motions.”

Danny Briere said the Flyers “need to want it more.”

Kimmo Timonen pointed toward the Flyers’ attitude and said “it needs to change.”

“You have to go beat people to win games,” Timonen said. “The attitude has to be that ‘We’re the Flyers.’ We go into games and people should be afraid. They’re not.”

Canadiens backup goaltender Peter Budaj certainly wasn’t afraid on Saturday night at Bell Centre. Why should he have been? The Flyers managed just 2 shots in the first period - and 6 total through the first 32 minutes of the game. They were on-pace to set a new franchise record for fewest shots (13) in a game.

The end result, a thorough 4-1 beating, was predictable based on the start.

The harsh words from the Flyers post-game were just that: words. There is nothing this team has done on the ice this season to strike fear in any opponent. And it many ways, it is mind-boggling.

For once, it hasn’t been the goaltending. That trend continued on Saturday night, even as the Flyers turned to their backup - Brian Boucher - for the second time in 16 games this season.

It hasn’t been penalty kill. The Flyers have killed off 16 straight power plays and they’re 33-for-35 (94.3 percent) in their last 9 games.

It certainly can't be because of talent. Look at the rosters of the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, or Devils - teams they've lost to on this road trip. Can you say the Flyers are inferior to those teams talent-wise?

The offense deserves a lot the blame - from Giroux on down. The Flyers have failed to score more than 2 goals in 11 of their 16 games this season.

“With all of the scorers we have on this team, it’s tough to understand at this point,” Briere said. “There’s a lot of frustration.”

To me, the Flyers' offensive struggles, like almost every other deficiency with this team, seem to stem from their own brains.

How else do you explain going offsides 4 times in one period alone? Finishing second on seemingly every puck battle? A too-many-men on the ice penalty at a crucial point in the game? Three power plays without a single shot on net?

“We were not competing,” Giroux said. “We were not winning battles. It’s just frustrating to see. We need to cut those mistakes down. We’re aware that mental mistakes are out there. We need to cut that.”

It was amazing to see that no matter how bad the Flyers’ start was on Saturday, they were still trailing just 2-1 entering the third period. It was a very winnable game - even before you consider who was in net for Montreal.

Instead, it seemed like once Briere’s shot snuck through Budaj to cut the Canadiens’ lead in half, they settled rather than pushing the gas pedal to the floor.

“We need to just want to win more,” Giroux said. “In the third period we were down 2-1. We need to find a way to get it done.”

The same thing happened in New Jersey on Friday night. The Flyers battled for a 3-1 lead. Once they got it, they hit the snooze bar.

Twice this season, the Flyers have scored in the first minute of the game - as they did in Toronto last Monday night - and they’ve found a way to give it back rather quickly.

“Playing not to lose, that’s what comes to mind,” Timonen said. “It’s too much up and down. You can’t win games in this league that way.”

Yes, the Flyers have injuries to key players. Yes, their schedule has not been easy - they’ve played 5 back-to-back sets already of their 16 games. But they’re no different than any other team in the league in both of those categories.

It’s impossible to look at any one of the Flyers’ 9 losses and say they didn’t have a chance to at least take the game over at one point or another. They’ve been right there in a lot of games, and a lot of them have turned out to be lopsided losses. Four of them have been by 3 goals or more.

“We’re in the game and it’s like the game keeps slipping away from us,” Mike Knuble said. “We’re just having a hard time mustering the tying goal or the goal to get us back in the game. Once they get on top of us, it’s been easy for teams to close out the game on us. The game’s on the line and we’ve just kind of played it out. It’s the will to win, I don’t think it’s been there enough for us yet.”

It’s time to get concerned. Peter Laviolette said the Flyers were “concerned before the game,” and they’ll continue to be concerned. The Flyers are the first team in the NHL to have played a third of this 48-game schedule. They’re 2-8-0 on the road. Teams that they’re chasing for playoff spots - like the Jets, Rangers and Hurricanes - all have 3 games in-hand at this point.

“The league’s not going to wait around,” Knuble said. “Nobody’s happy about it. That’s unacceptable for our group, from our last player to our top guy. You don’t have time to practice your way out of it, you don’t have time to play your way out of it. The urgency, it’s got to be there. You’ve got 60 possible points left to get. Other teams are going to win their share of games, it’s going to get harder and harder to climb your way up the ladder.”

Time for a shake up...expect a trade soon. Unfortunately, I think it will be a smaller one to send a message. I'm not sure the flyers have the pieces to return a difference maker at this point.

There's going to be lots of elbow room at Xfinity Live! come late April. No playoff games at the big stagecoach this year.

I don't want a trade because I like our you guns and nobody's going to take the old vets off our hands and give us anything of value in return. The best shakeup this team could have right now without making itself any worse is to fire Lavi. His system is not working here anymore and quite frankly I'm less than impressed with how this team starts games, starts periods, and plays so gutless at times. They obviously don't respect him anymore and it's time for fresh blood behind the bench. We used to be the team other teams feared. This team though is a bunch of fairies.

Most players and coaches learn from their mistakes and try to improve game to game but not these guys. do they not have a video room..I mean Enough of the Timonen to Giroux sloppy passing up top on the Power Play, the entire league has figured that play out and it doesnt even work...change it up...skate a little bit for god sakes...Get Timonen off the PP he is horrible...too slow, too indisicive, and a poor shot...also throwing the puck around the boards cant be you entire offensive strategy, at some point you have to grow a pair and fight to bring the puck to the center of the xone so you can actually take a damn shot on net...

"throwing the puck around the boards" - i.e., "the cycle" -- has been the foolish goal of this team for years and years, dating back to Lindros. When the puck is on the boards, the other team is quite happy: you can't score from there. When the rugby scrums end, when the team consistently SKATES the puck into the offensive zone (vs. the equally stupid "dump and chase"), then we'll know the team is serious about hockey in general and in improvement in particular.

Once again, Quixote II is correct in his analysis. This team has no sniper with the exception of the smallish Danny Briere. Flyers offensive hockey, since the Pelle Lindbergh/Ron Hextall era, was cycle the puck down low, create a jam around the net and bang the puck in amidst the chaos. We need that real sniper or two.

Giving up on an HOF player like Jagr was ill advised, too.

This team, from the owner on down, is a joke. Their play is completely unacceptable yet it's tolerated by management, themselves, and many fans. I don't want to hear this team has talent either. Talent doesn't mean anything if you don't bring it every game.

The personnel decisions have been horrible. JVR trade was a mistake. I understand he was due a large salary bump but Luke Schenn sucks. Leighton over Bob? Are you kidding me? Not re-signing Jagr. Giroux has been exposed and can't stand on his own without bigger bodies around him. Hartnell is overrated.

The bottom line is the entire organization is lost in the woods.

They need to put in place a better defense. And if Giroux is their star and their future they need to surround him with better and bigger talent.

The team exists comfortably inside the protective bubble of The Evil Empire (Comcast). They have very little pure hockey talent, yet you get the moron Coates and crew praising them endlessly. Clement last night said the effort was there, they just need different strategy. Ridiculous. The style of play and the talent they recruit (wack-a-Mole goons rather than skaters) must happen at the direction of the owner, because they have been playing this way since the 1970s.

Nothing will change til the owner does. Stop going to games. Call out Comcast for being the evil propaganda organ that it is.

@Quixote II: Great points. And to think how for years we all cried for the Gang of Six to sell the Phils out to Comcast. Looking at Corporate Ownership of Pro Sports Teams, I find a hard time to find ONE Corporate Owner who created and nurtured a championship winning team. The Flyers have now entered that phase of unwatchability thanks to these empty soul-less ba$tard$. The Sixers stunk under Comcast. The Cubs stunk under the Tribune. The Yankess stunk under CBS. I suppose the Busch family with the Cards may qualify, but no other...

You need an owner who loves the sport, his town and his team. Not a bunch of bean counters looking at it as a revenue enhancer and tax break...

Come on, guys. Nobody tries harder than Mr. Snider.
He has spent to the max signing top free agents like Roenick and Forsberg. More recently he spent megabucks to sign the top free agent goalie available...
The Flyers have always been among the top spending teams in the league...

HOF is right. The founder of the Flyers bleeds orange and black, and no one's gut grinds more than his when they lose. Blaming Mr. Snider because our power play sucks is absurd. If you want to point fingers for a lackluster offense, point them at Lavy.

I am also beginning to think a change behind the bench is the only real thing they can do right now to put a flame under the players' bottoms. It seems that Lavy's system doesn't work with the personnel they are having. The Flyers are good at the PK, but atrocious on even strength, which points to the fact they are playing the wrong strategy.

Check the stats, quigly46. Luke Schenn is actually one of the few Flyers with a good plus/minus figure. The JVR for Schenn trade went well so far, for both parties. They didn't sign Jags and Carle because of the offer sheet given to Weber. They would have signed Jags for sure, had they known the Weber deal could not be pulled. The trouble they are having right now is a slumping Giroux and a complete lack of secondary scoring. Plus, the don't have anything close to a shutdown line, which is why they can't maintain leads. Lavy overestimates the potential some of these players have. They are not suited to dominating a game, in my eyes. They should put the emphasis on defense first, like the Devils.

It is not the players. It is an antiquated system of stick handling the puck until you are forced to pass it due to defensive pressure, which usually results in a bad pass. They should be passing then skating to the open areas, constantly passing and moving, and they don't. They are very easy to defend. They score half their goals by throwing it on net and trying to whack at it in a scrum. Joke.

this team's goinhg nowhere since we lost Jagr, van riemsdyk, Pronger, Carle, Richard, Carter, Bobvrosky and now we brought Boucher and Leighton... omg...

    too many mistake...bad decisions...

Bryz seem good this season but no defence around himé

Giroux, Briere, Couturier, Talbot.. seem "lost in the wood" as Bryz said last year when he had a bad time...

anyway... forget this shi***ty season.. our team is down..

WHen you watch other teams play on the Hockey Network or NBC Sports broadcasts, you see the difference beween the Flyers and most of the other teams. In those other games, you see hard skating and they seem to "want it" more than the Fly guys. I love the Flyers but most of the team doesn't seem to want to play any hockey this season. Very discouraging.

This team simply doesn't have the depth of talent. Lots of players (to include Hartnell who was signed to yet another longgggg term albatross contract) had career years last year that they will be unlikely to repeat. They make terrible decisions through the neutral zone...I can't even remember how many goals against come from turnovers in the neutral zone or trying to exit the d-zone. No one respects their shot from the D corps on the PP so they just sag in and put a wall in front of the goalie. Briere needs to be bought out or traded as he rarely ever "brings it" on a nightly basis. In fact it seems that most lines do better once he has been moved off. I see the coach getting fired even though its the players who are out their (not) playing the game.

The Flyers aren't inferior talent wise to a team like the Devils? Really? The Devils were a Stanley Cup team last year and divisional leaders this year. Given the position of the Flyers last year, and so far this year, how can the Flyers be equal in talent?

Briere? Really? He is the only guy on this team that thinks to shoot. This team dumped their Captain...sent him to the lowly Kings...in return we get two players that were so talented that they couldn't get ice time on a bad team. Result? Richards hoist the Cup...Philly? Put those losers on top two lines and endure the worst down spin in years. Giroux is talented...he is NOT goal scorer.

When Sestito - who I think has a great NHL career ahead of him -scored 2 goals, the only goals, against the highest scoring team in the league, the alarms went off for me. It was a great to see him produce but what about the rest of the payroll? Rinaldo that night had one the greatest fights in Flyers history as well. Are these the only guys that want it? As it stands now, the Flyers will not survive against teams like Chicago, Anaheim, Vancouver, NJ to name a few. There's more but I'm tired of typing for team that doesn't appreciate its fans enough (again) to give it there all.....

If things don't turn around by the deadline, the Flyers would be smart to move Briere. He, along with Crosby, is one of only two players to average a point a game in the playoffs at the moment. You'd have to think at least one team would be willing to make a reasonable offer to Holmgren at the deadline for a player, 35 years or not, that shows up when the games matter. Unfortunately, Danny is about the only vet on our roster that would net something nice in return. I wouldn't move Hartnell and Kimo just re-signed.
Oh, and I'd throw Lavy in on any deal for a bag of pucks in return. I've wondered about his system since the Devils playoff series last year. We have big, slower DMen who back in at the defensive blueline and let the other team either dump and chase or cross the line at will. Oh, and Bryz being a terrible puckhandler doesn't help things either. I'm not blaming him at the moment as I think he's been fine this year for the most part but our system looks out of sync. WHAT exactly IS our system? Where have the Flyers of past gone? I don't mean the "bullies" but the teams that played with FIRE...with passion. Teams that may have lost the game but made the other team work their butts off for it (and feel it the next day). What's Mike Keenan up to these days? (I joke). I sincerely hope Lavy's days are numbered by the start of next season at the latest and someone with fire is brought in to shake things up. Just my two cents...

flyerdommo, I commend the idea of staying positive, but it is not warranted to support the off season Homer had. Luke Schenn is playing ok, sure. But it was not enough return for what was given up. They needed to keep JVR for a bigger, better deal for a defenseman, instead of trading for someone who is "ok" - assuming JVR should have been traded at all. If they gave Carle a raise, it prevents having to trade a player (JVR) to get another defenseman. But too often management places too much emphasis on the free agent market, and while chasing Weber/Parise, guys were exiting out the back door. If you read Bill Meltzer's article last week discussing what types of players this team needs, he listed two wingers and a mobile defenseman. People...those are the 3 guys who left for more money. The answer was here already, and they let it go. Now Jagr leads Dallas in overall points. Matt Carle has more points than most of our forwards, and we all know how JVR is doing - he beat Schenn Monday night for is 8th goal.
flyerdommo, look at the stats. Its not the secondary scoring, its the PRIMARY scoring. The last game was won with two Tom Sestito goals. With an aging, injury prone blue line, and a thin free 2014 agent market, this organization needs to start drafting. In the meantime, they should turn the blue line over to Bourdon/Gustafsson/Manning etc., when they are ready-this year. Because what they've got now is too slow to keep pace with the other NHL teams. Give them the minutes this season to gain the necessary experience, because it is already lost.

Hartnell's return should help the struggling offense, but defense and goaltending will remain weaknesses. Game tied against Devils and Coburn stands idly behind Clarkson who deflects in winning goal. Bryzgalov lets in a couple goals that need to be stopped. Boucher is a pretty mediocre backup. How do they cure these shortcomings? Holmgren will probably trade their first round pick, which will probably be a top five, and get some big old and slow, washed-up defenseman. Is that a little too cynical?

The truth is this - this team lacks CHEMISTRY, an identity if you will. Look at the current composition of this team, and it's easy to ascertain, they need to play a more defensive style of hockey. They lack great speed & scoring. They lack that mandatory top-pairing Dmen to be a serious Cup contender. Lavi needs tobrecognize that and change course. They need to play to their strengths - grind-it-out defensive hockey and hope Bryz continues to play well. But let's be honest - this team is a top scorer & a #1 Dman away from being a serious Cup contender. Homer has a tough task in the offseason finding them.

Firing Lavi is NOT the answer. Just like firing John Stevens, Hitch, and Bill Barber wasn't the answer. This team needs a REAL captain. A veteran presence to take the bull by the horns and LEAD. You would think they would have learned with Lindros, Forsberg, and Richards that the best player on the ice isn't necessarily the best leader in the locker roo. Giroux has NO business being captain. It should have gone to Briere or Hartnell.

    This completely disorganized mess.
This totally undiciplined play and this total lack of interest is not new. It's been going on for years now.
And it's only due to one reason.
Because it's ALLOWED to continue by a coach that's either unable to fix it, doesn't care to fix it, or worse, doesn't thnk anything is wrong.
In any case, Laviolette is the problem.
Not the players... The LA Kins are no more talented than we are... Heck, They ARE the Flyers..
We've even changed 10 players last year...
So how can they be blamed when there is no system in place..no one knows where to play, knows what they're responsible for and on top of it know they are not being held responsible for their play.
I've been watching this team since 67'.
I'm old enough to have seen the Ramblers.
I'm telling you now, Laviolette is by far the worse coach this team has ever had.
I wasn't his biggest fan, but this team needs an Iron Mike again to kick it every day, every game, every shift.
To drill into it's head the players need to eat, sleeep, drink and expel hockey 24/7.
They need a system in place they understand and are responsible for playing every time they take the ice.
They need to be READY to take the ice when the puck drops so thwy stop giving up goals in the 1st minute of play. That's also been going on for years now..I'm sick of it. I'm sick of nothing being done about it.
Homer needs to replace Lavy sooner rather than later. And if he doesn't, then Snider needs to step in and take charge and get rid of both of them.

Unless the team wins it all this year, I'll consider the season a wash with a 48 game schedule, no training camp, and injuries to key player sheaded into the season. No need to give up on your younger players this year. Regroup, clear up some cap space and go after Bobby Ryan, Subban (if he's available) etc in the offseason

The problem is the team has accepted losing as a way of life now. The players know that the the excuses will always be accepted by the fans and management. as a matter of fact, it is management who feeds into the excuses. You name it slow starts, injuries, bad ice, travel, full moon - nobody accepts responsibility. This whole organization needs a complete overhaul. From the top down - including the scouting staff.

Flyers have had 8 coaches since Snider appointed the Clarke/Holmgren Good 'ole Boy sheep to run the personnel, countless players with none or at best a small few that were from anywhere other than North America. The lemmings fill the stands...it doesn't matter...Snider said years ago...with the money they make from the CSN world, the stands can be empty and they sill turn a profit! The Cup drought will clearly continue regardless of who is in any place on the bench.

Look at the rosters of the Canadiens, Maple Leafs, or Devils - teams they've lost to on this road trip. Can you say the Flyers are inferior to those teams talent-wise? Actually, yes, yes and again, yes

I thought last season that the best thing that could happen to this team was to not make the playoffs. This year it's the same team with the same problems, and finishing in the basement might finally be enough to wake up the owners to what needs to be done.

Remember the regular season means NOTHING - just look at the Devils past 10 years. So why should the Flyers work hard to get into first place when the can slink into the playoffs and then get serious with a healthy team and everyone having lots of energy? But if they do not make the playoffs, everyone will look like fools? They do need a better scoring strategy and they do need to work out lines and matchups, now. April is too late. And they have needed that sniper for 2 or 3 DECADES!

No team has more losses than the Philadelphia Flyers. Yet there are people here who are still saying they are good enough to compete for the Stanley Cup? They not only will be unable to win the Cup, but not even make the playoffs UNLESS they make MEANINGFUL changes.

This team has AVERAGE talent. Look at the roster!! For goodness sakes Frank don't show your lack of experience. They have an average to above average goalie; the D is pedestrian and moves the puck slowly; the forwards are young- small and do not control possession. This is an average group- despite what comcast is peddling along with the pr staff (writers).........

Forgot one........Homer and Clarkie, as much as I loved them on the ice- are too subservient to and in awe of Snider, who has made them into multi-millionaires, long after the playing days ended. Too much roster rotation year after year as the react to Ed. The last time there was an independent GM, who Ed respected and didn't bully was Keith.........oh and look at the results and his record.

The team does not lack heart, it lacks talent. It may take 2 or 3 years to make the playoffs.

"All the scorers on this team".....where? And don't give me rookie sensations and sophomores that had one good season, because that is the issue, we have way too many of them. And sorry but Girioux is over rated. And go ahead and fire Lavi, cuz sorry you aint winning with this roster under any coach.

Lots of valid comments.....The answer is simple: LACK of TALENT, compared to at least 8 teams in the Flyers' Conference. Very little chance to make playoffs. Look at the teams we would have to pass. I have given up on Holmgren. The coach is not far behing.

Okay, I'll say it.."a team going nowhere". I've been watching hockey since it was on black and white TV (yea, I'm an old guy), and I've never been so disappointed in a home hockey team. Overrated players earning big bucks content to put the time in, nothing more. I feel sorry for the players that are actually going out there every night contributing, but they are few and far between. In my opinion, the Schenn brothers are grossly overated. So they score inconsistently or get a big hit once in awhile...big deal. This team needs a big shake-up and attitude adjustment. Are you listening Lavy and Homer??? Complacency cannot be accepted. By the way, Ray Emery had a shutout today for Chicago..... thought you'd like to know... http://news.yahoo.com/blackhawks-beat-kings-point-15th-straight-233123216--spt.html

Sestito should play over Rinaldo for starters. We also need a heavyweight now that Shelley is out. This team is way too soft.

Get rid of Timonen and Voracek on the PP. Put some American or Canadian players in their place who get it and shoot it, rather than pass it back and forth as if it's a game. Also, have G move all around on the PP and stop having him be a Human Target at the face off dot all the time

Shawnmac is spot-on. Our boys' team, has some young talent. But is also is cobbled together with ex-Flyers, bruisers, and hand-me-down journeymen players, all collecting a massive paycheck. Lay off the Molson boys.

Yep. All good points, I think. Merely dumping it in or cycling is actually losing possession of the puck and offering a 50/50 chase to regain it. Always hated it. Perhaps Snyder's loyalty is to his detriment. The team currently employs ex-Flyers McIlhargey, Sinasalo, Ross Fitzpatrick, Hill, Hatcher, McCarthy, Brown, Paddock, Clakre, Holmgren, and Berube. 1975.

dunno danno, matt carle was not part of the solution. Carle was weak. Asking for more money doens't justify his poor play over the years.
