Flyers in trade talks for Ryane Clowe

POSTED: Monday, April 1, 2013, 10:50 AM

Two points back of a playoff spot, the Flyers refuse to call themselves “buyers” before Wednesday afternoon’s trade deadline.

Whatever they label themselves, the Flyers are still very much active in trade talks.

The Flyers are in negotiations with San Jose about acquiring forward Ryane Clowe, multiple sources confirmed to the Daily News on Monday.

Clowe, 30, is a pending unrestricted free agent. However, he would not be a “rental” player, since one key to acquiring Clowe would be locking him up with a long-term deal. Clowe is playing out the final season of a 4-year, $14.5 million pact.

There was a report in “The Telegram,” Clowe’s hometown paper in St. John’s, Newfoundland, that a trade with the Flyers will be completed sometime on Monday. One member of the Flyers’ front office called the "Telegram" report “over eager.”

A call placed to Clowe’s agent Monday morning was not immediately returned to the Daily News.

Clowe has been on the market for the better part of the season. He has a full no-trade clause but Sharks general manager Doug Wilson has been working with Clowe’s agent to try and find the right fit. Clowe’s name has also been linked to the Canucks, Wild, Canadiens, Rangers and Bruins. Wilson would prefer that Clowe lands in the East.

Two key members of the Sharks’ scouting staff – including director of pro scouting John Ferguson and Eastern-based scout Jason Rowe – were at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday night. Rowe was in town all week, at each of the Flyers’ four home games.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren and director of hockey operations Chris Pryor personally scouted the Sharks in Minnesota on March 23. The Flyers have also been interested in forward/defenseman Brent Burns, though Burns carries a monstrous cap hit for the next few years.

Clowe seems to make much more sense. He is a sturdy, reliable winger who could play alongside Claude Giroux to help him create. He has just 11 assists (no goals) in 29 games this season, but has been a relatively consistent, 50-point scorer over the last handful of seasons. Clowe averaged 54 points per year from 2008-2012.

It is interesting to see what the burgeoning market will bring for Clowe. Some seem to think the Sharks overvalue Clowe, but there is clearly a list of teams lined up for his services.

Wednesday's deadline is at 3 o'clock.

We better not trade our 1st round pick. I hope Homer is not that crazy.

They are not going to trade their first round pick. They are not going to give up Coots (who they could have traded for Subban or even Weber). They are not going to give up Laughton. If they want to give SJ a bag of pucks ok but I don't want to see another long term no movement clause contract handed out.

If they acquire him, I'm sure Homer will over pay to get him, then over pay him, plus throw in a No Movement Clause for good measure.

Wait, he has zero goals this season and he plays offense? OMG don't tell me they would throw away their 1st round pick on this guy!!!!!

None of this matters until Bryzgalov is gone.

Why don't your Bryzgalov haters just go away.

For the first 15 games of he season, Bryz was BY FAR the best player on this team. If the O had scored goals back then, the Flyers would be somewhere between the 5 and 7 seed right now in the East.

Bryz is the only reason this team doesn't have 22 losses or more and isn't in dead last place!

I would not call myself a Bryz hater, but I have a bit more of a grasp on reality than you do. Bryz is 39th and 36th in the league in save percentage and GAA. Those are ugly lookin' numbers no matter who you play for. So, off the bat, I'm not impressed.

Let's not pretend like it has been a shooting gallery with Bryz left out to dry. There are 21 teams in the NHL that give up more shots per game than the Flyers. Think about that for a moment. The team that gives up the most shots is Buffalo. And you know what, down to the decimal, the Sabres and Flyers have given up the exact amount of goals per game (3.03).

So, what is the difference? How is it that Buffalo faces the most shots in the league and gives up the same goals as the Flyers? Now you have a compelling argument that your goalie is the difference, except it favors the Sabres, not the Flyers.

I will not deny you that Bryz played better at the beginning of the season, but he was never great, and he is paid to be great. As for losing/winning games, aside from his one shootout win, Bryz has been horrific on shootouts and breakaways. Pretty easy to argue that his inability to stop a breakaway/penalty shot/shootout has cost this team several points, the same points they would need to be in the playoffs.

As for the reason the Flyers are not in last place, it is not Bryz, it is their #1 ranked power play, for which Bryz is a complete non-factor.

excellent research snipes, the better question may be how did his stats stack up in phoenix when the Flyers signed him? I'm too tired to look but id bet pretty outstanding as he was considered one of the top goalies in the league and a free agent. Can't fault the flyers for the signing. By the way, a wise man once said...stats are like bikini's, they show a lot but they dont show everything. For example, i guess they dont keep a stat on shot quality but i watch a LOT of hockey and no goalie faces the quality of chances than Bryz...none!

He was much better in Phoenix and Anaheim. What is most discouraging is that ALL his numbers are down this year from last (GAA, save percentage, wins, shutouts per games played, etc.). I don't know if I agree with you on the number of quality chances allowed-- there are some really bad defensive teams out there, as the rules no longer allow any real defense (I digress). But in any event, bottom line is that the Flyers pay him to be a goalie that is able to rise above that, and Bryz has not been that guy aside from March 2012. As the team's numbers have gotten worse, so have his.

I don't know-- he is an NHL goalie, so at some point he will be lightning hot again and it will not be because he doesn't face quality chances. He'll just get hot. But he is paid to be really good every night and great some nights-- I would say he is really good once every 5 games and great once every 10. That ain't gettin' it done for me.

Because Mr. Universe is overpaid and his contract goes on until 2020 which will cripple this organization for the entire Giroux era. We need a REAL goalie like Bernier from LA. Philly fans forgot what it is to have a legit goalie since we haven't had one for 20 years.

I thought that's what Scott Hartnall, Wayne Simmonds and Miek Knuble were, "Sturdy realiable wingers". not to mention, McGinn, Fedetenko, Rinaldo... Can we please get some talent in here! is homer reverting back to the Clarkie days of old in building a team with an inconsistent goalie, a star Centerman, and good winger and 10 grinders who need 50 shots to beat a goalie 3 times and who are routinely victims of the infamous Goalie Who Stands on Head.

Go ahead and blame Bryz but the Flyers defensive zone coverage looks like a mites-on-ice game (everyone chasing the puck).

This team has failed on offense, defense and goal tending which is why they are where they are. Not all on Bryz but you are staring at 7 more years of him and he is going to get worse with age, not better. Need to buy him out after the season.

The word is that Jagr wants to go to the Blackhawks, so I guess Homer will settle for clown...er....Clowe. Why do we need a forward who hasn't scored a goal all season? Why not get defensive help?
