With every loss, the harsh reality of the numbers game becomes more and more in-focus.

As Sixers CEO Adam Aron mentioned on Thursday, there are a group of “ping pong” ball addictions - and probably some who are wondering what the Flyers’ lottery chances might be.

On pace to finish with 43 points, the Flyers have as good a chance to finish 29th overall (6.5 percent) as they currently do to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs (6.9 percent).

Finishing 29th would give the Flyers an 18.8 percent shot to win the league’s new draft lottery. Even finishing 26th would grab them an 8.1 percent share of the ping pong balls.

That's looking at things on the positive side, no?

According to, the Flyers’ playoff hopes took a 5.3 percent nosedive in New Jersey on Wednesday. As Ilya Bryzgalov noted on Tuesday, the Devils could effectively end the Flyers’ season on Friday night in South Philadelphia.

And the Devils know it.

“We want to keep them behind us,” Johan Hedberg told the Bergen (N.J.) Record. “They’re behind us and they are a team that we consider to be a very good team. We know they’re going to be fighting as hard as they can to get back on the right side of the playoff (picture).”
