Somewhere, you can bet the Flyers’ players will be scoreboard watching on Friday night.
That’s because the Flyers can officially clinch a playoff berth on Friday night without even playing.
The Flyers can follow the Rangers, Blues, and Penguins as the NHL’s fourth team to clinch a postseason berth with a:
-Buffalo regulation loss in New York against the Rangers.
-Winnipeg regulation loss in Washington against the Capitals.
Both teams need to lose in regulation. Winnipeg is 3-1-1 against Washington this season. Buffalo is 0-1-2 against New York this season.
Regardless of what happens on Friday night, the Flyers can clinch an outright berth by themselves with a win over Montreal on Saturday night. And truthfully for the Flyers, who are still gunning for New York, that's likely the way they'd rather do it than see the Rangers continue to acquire points.
Through more than 90 percent of the NHL schedule this season, only 3 teams have clinched a playoff berth. The regular season ends on April 7, which is the busiest day of the NHL season with all 30 teams in action.
