He's not Rick Nash. But the Flyers got their defenseman.

After weeks of deliberating, the Flyers bolstered their defensive corps by adding Dallas blue liner Nicklas Grossman in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 2012 and a 3rd round pick in 2012.

Grossman, 27, posted 5 assists and 26 penalty minutes in 52 games with the Stars this season. From Sweden, he will now be teammates with fellow countryman Andreas Lilja.

He’s been on the Flyers’ radar for quite a while, though Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said on Thursday night that the Stars didn’t make him available until “just recently.”

“He’s a guy that we’ve talked about over the last few weeks,” Holmgren said. “He’s a bigger body, a good, solid defensive defenseman. He can kill penalties for us, play a regular shift. He’s just a guy who can chew up minutes.”

Grossman earns $1.65 million on the salary cap. Like many of the other names available before the Feb. 27 trade deadline, Grossman will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

When asked if the Flyers were interested in signing Grossman to a new deal, Holmgren was non-committal. The Flyers would probably like to see more of him before making a decision.

“I think that kind of goes both ways,” Holmgren said. “I think Nick needs to see whether he likes it here, too. We like him. We’ll see where it goes from there.”

In Grossman, the Flyers haven’t acquired a flashy player. Instead, they’ve found a better positional defenseman who can clear the front of the net if needed. Grossman can also contribute on the penalty kill. In Dallas, he posted the third-highest ice time per game on the penalty kill.

And most importantly for the Flyers, they were able to acquire a player who will help now without giving up a key roster piece that will affect them down the stretch toward the playoffs.

“He’s not a guy that will put up a lot of points,” Holmgren said. “ I think he’s really going to give us a boost in our own zone and get us out of our zone quickly. He makes a good first pass. He’s not a guy that will put up a lot of points. He’s developed over time in Dallas, and he’s still a good, young player. We’re excited to have him.”

Holmgren said the Flyers were trying to get Grossman on a late commercial flight tonight to have him arrive in Philadelphia in time for Friday’s practice. He’d likely be available to play his first game in a Flyers uniform on Saturday afternoon against Pittsburgh.

And the Flyers might not be done.

Holmgren then added to the intrigue, after being asked about Grossman, whether he'd use the term 'unlikely' to describe the Flyers' chances on landing a "superstar forward," a la Nash.

"I don't know if I'd use the word 'unlikely'," Holmgren said.

This is a good deal for Philly. A hefty, hefty price for an UFA, but does fill a need for the team. They have upgraded the defence, now they just need to upgrade the commitment by the forwards, and perhaps increase Courturier's ice time.

This is a good deal for Philly, and we've given up more at the deadline. Remember Clarkie giving Maxime Ouellet and three draft picks for Adam Oates. Grossman has good size at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds and is a good shot blocker. He has played against opposing top lines a lot and should really help the Flyers. I'm afraid Courturier may have hit the "rookie wall." His recent play has slipped considerably...

Courturier was a force in the Buffalo game tonight. He was given a bit more ice time due to the injuries to Briere and Sestito. Courturier was exceptional along the boards in the offensive zone, while always being on the proper side of the puck. I wish Schenn would watch Courturier's game a little. He constantly cheats too low in the offensive zone, and gives up a lot of odd man advantages. Schenn is a rookie that is still learning the NHL game, Courturier is a pro. There is no rookie wall for him, just smooth and consistent.

I do agree that Courturier played better in tonight's game, but no way has he been consistent: Sean has struggled pretty much in every area since the All-Star break. The 19-year-old has been part of the PK struggle, posted just one point and been placed back on the fourth line and has been on the ice for several opposition even-strength goals since the ASB.

P.S. Schenn has racked up 8 goals and 11 points since the Winter Classic. Simmons not has 20 goals, Mike Richards has 14...Glad he's gone...

SO,,,are you saying that being on the ice for even strength goals against is bad? Because Schenn and Simmonds have been on the ice for more goals against, than for, over the entire season. Simmonds has a role, and plays it to perfection. Schenn is a horrible disappointment. At 3.1 million a season, he is a defensive liability to the team. Once again someone is inferring that this is about Mike Richards. I don't lie, if I could choose between Richards and Schenn, I would choose Richards every time. Schenn is a liability, who scores goals by disregarding the defensive side of the puck. He scores most of his goals in losses. He has been hottest, when the team has struggled the most. He isn't ready to carry a line as a centerman in the NHL. It is fine in January, but if he is selfish in May, this team gets nowhere.

Couturier has been a very responsible centerman all season long. He has played with players like Sestito, Rinaldo, Shelley all year. When he gets a chance with scoring wingers, he has excelled. I don't think Courturier has been bad on the PK at all. Giroux has been absolutely lost defensively of late...both on the PK and even strength...that has hurt the PK a lot.

What about the lack of a real NHL goalie?

A good move, but it's too bad that this means the Flyers probably won't be making a move for Kubina or Schenn, better players with better all around games.

the perceived lack of a real NHL goalie comes from the fact that we have one of the worst defenses in the league this year. if we had an average d the goalies would have much better numbers.
