Flyers re-sign Powe to 1-year deal
UPDATE 2:
Here are comments from Darrell Powe following his signing with the Flyers:
Q: What is your reaction after signing with the Flyers?
DP: “Obviously, I am very excited. The Flyers are a great organization. They have been good to me all along so to sign back with the Flyers is exactly what I want and I look forward to next season.”
Q: Speaking of next season, what are the expectations of this team?
DP: “We expect to go all the way next season. We have a good team coming in and we all got a taste of things last year. We should all be motivated to get back where we were last year and finish the job this time.”
Q: What can you say about Philadelphia’s offseason acquisitions?
DP: “I think they are going to help our team. We’ve added some size and a little bit of finesse out there. These will be a couple of more pieces to the puzzle and will hopefully help us get to where we were last year.”
UPDATED: Along with confirming the Powe signed, the Flyers announced they have signed three others to contracts: defenseman Dan Jancevski and forwards Matt Clackson and David Laliberte.
Laliberte, 24, recorded 46 points (18G,28A) in 66 games with the Adirondack Phantoms, in the AHL, and had three points in 11 games with the Flyers.
Clackson, 25, spent the entire season with Adirondack, where he posted six points (2G,4A) and 174 penalty minutes in 60 games with the Phantoms.
Jancevski, 29, appeared in 78 regular season games with the Texas Stars, the Dallas Stars’ AHL affiliate, where he recorded 23 points (3G,20A) and 71 penalty minutes.
EARLIER
The Flyers and restricted free agent forward Darroll Powe agreed to a one-year deal yesterday, the Daily News has learned.
Powe, 25, will earn $725,000 for the upcoming season in a one-way contract – meaning the Flyers plan to have him on their roster throughout the season. It’s a 36-percent raise from the $532,500 he earned last year.
Powe will be a restricted free agent again next season.
Last season, the Princeton University graduate and scrappy forward posted 9 goals and 6 assists for 15 points over 63 games. He missed 19 games with a dislocated right shoulder last November and December. He also played in all 23 playoff games.
Powe’s signing likely rounds out the Flyers’ depth chart at the forward position, giving coach Peter Laviolette 14 forwards to manage in training camp. With Blair Betts likely not available at the start of the season because of an offseason shoulder surgery, Powe would fit in the top 12 in Betts’ absence. That would leave room for Riley Cote as the extra forward until Betts can return.
With 14 forwards, 8 defensemen and 2 goalies – at least two players more than the Flyers need to carry – they have approximately $327,737 remaining in salary cap space.

- MichaelZoe: Powe is a center. He had a decent season last year, and had a better shooting percentage than Hartnell and Leino, and one comparable to Gagne and JVR. At his salary and with the linemates he gets paired with, I don't think he's expected to light the lamp every night. He can fill in for Gagne on the PK. Good insurance pickup at a nominal cost since we have basically no one good left on the Phantoms. Agreed that Richards needs a veteran to play with...his name was Simon Gagne. As for Lappy and Shelly-- look, this is Philadelphia and hockey is about entertainment. In this city, like it or not, fighting and "heart" are valued as much as winning the Cup. Hence the fascination with Lappy and the addition of Shelly. If you don't like it, go cheer for a non-fighting team like the Caps, because Philly is always going to trend on the side of bruisers.
the lack of insight from both the writers and fans in this town is disgraceful. how does resigning Powe help with Betts out? It doesn't. Powe isn't a center. Trading Gagne for $1 mil in cap space doesn't make sense. Richards played awesome next to Knuble, he needs a lock room leader and Cup winner like Guerin, NOT Carcillo or a lazy Russian. There has to be more moves coming, because this roster doesn't make sense right now. You don't need Walker, Shelley and Carcillo. You don't need Lappy and Powe. MichaelZoe
Wow. Powe is glad to get an NHL contract. That's news. Realistic One
anybody, richards, ryan mediatedviscera
i'm not going to pretend like i know better than Holmgren about how to manage the Flyers, but i do know that the Flyers' management treats the goalie position like a revolving door. stand behind your goalie. give him support and that will give him confidence. stop treating your goalie like it's his fault if you don't make the playoffs or don't get the cup. stonelamb
There will be another trade to clear space and sign a goalie. I believe it will ultimately be Coburn. InThe Crease
Comment removed.
Man, I could go for a "Carter for Ryan", with one of our excess defenseman thrown in for good measure and one of their draft picks coming back, trade right now. That would be abso-fricking-lutely awesome. The Reddgie- Depth is the issue and it's being settled along with some wiggle room. It's not even August and people already want thier cake and eat it too? I want a beach house and a mountain retreat.....and the staff to care for it..and someone to drive me...and some large walkaround mony..and..and..and..
WCgrad77, it apprears that the Lightning are looking to sign Asham. dianne16
"If Carter can't embrace learning to play wing, using his size and going to the net, then to heck with him." - - - Carter doesn't want to play wing. It's not that he can't, but he's like A.I. #1 ... Has to have possession and everything HAS to revolve around him. At least on Offense, it's up to everyone else on the team to chase down the 3 on 1 after he hits nothing but glass from a bad angle. jcu123
I admit that I am a hockey newbie. Last season Pronger, Cagne, and Richards (sorry if spelling is off) had motivated a kid from the projects to excel in life. I became full-time fan last season due to the Flyboy's incredible run. I based my attitude and performance in the classroom on the Flyers' work ethic. From that angle, here is my view on the team in general and goalies in particular. It seems to me that our current goalies are good enough to get us to where we were last year, but other teams are also trying to get to the same position or better next season. Sometimes, opposing teams simply "has our number" and will beat us most times. It just happens to any team. Call it mojo. In my humble opinion, we have to be post-season specific when it comes to goalies. We have to predict who we will likely face and whether or not our goalies, regardless of personnel helping on the ice, can effectively deal with anticipated post-season opposition. I have a feeling that our brilliant coach is taking this into consideration. Keep the faith. Our team is going to be just fine. Therefore, our new goalie may actually turn out to be a new and improved version of his last-year self. Trust good coaching because it goes a long way, but there is also something about these Flyers that is way beyond trades, statistics, schedules, or even coaching. They have an amazing spirit. You all - check that - WE ALL saw it. That counts from something, right? Flyboys all the way, Philadelphia all the way, all of us all the way!!! WantToKnow
You look over the roster and you're optimistic. Until you get to goaltender. Leighton. God help us. eagle1971
Hey TempleOwl, Powe is a Forward not a D-man. Do you watch this team?? TheCaptain18
This should be 3 years. LaCroix,Nolet,Gendron
Flyers_70 - EVERYBODY'S game would improve tremendously when they're playing next to Richards and Giroux. Glad they locked up Powe, but would've preferred at least 3 yrs, he's the scrappy D-man this town thrives on. templeowl08
TRADE CARTER FOR BOBBY RYAN mediatedviscera
My problem is keeping Carter. We need a real goalie, that Cup-Winning goal? Leighton lets that in no matter who is standing in front of him. Carter's inability to score into wide open nets in the playoffs when it's desperately needed, that never changes. We have too many damn centers. Putting Giroux on a wing is a total waste of his talent and will only slow his development. If Carter can't embrace learning to play wing, using his size and going to the net, then to heck with him. Ever hear Carter interviewed? He's just too dumb to learn to do anything different. I'd trade him for high draft picks if I could. Paul1954
carcillo played well for the year... maybe he was scratched for the finals but you gotta get there somehow. Hartnell looked like good old claude lemieux last year and did nothing till the playoffs and now everyone loves him. you need a grinder like carcillo to even make it to the playoffs. nslack44
I like Carcillo. I've mentioned why before, so I won't get into that. If the second line of Hartnell Briere and Leino play at the same pace they left off last year & Zherdev works out, we're in the same shape coming into this year offensively as last year with a better defense. the sichee-ation
Carcillo is an idiot...everyone forgets game 6 of the 2009 playoffs vs. the Pens when the Flyers were up 3-0 and this idiot fights Talbot and wakes up the Pens who score 5 unanswered goals and take the series and go on to win the cup...Carcillo will always be an idiot in my book...he himself couldn't even believe he scored that OT winner... tralala- Powe= excellent signing for the money. Glad he will be back - another guy that leaves it all on the ice. Also look for Carcillo to score 15-20 goals this year with Shelley onboard as the Flyers' hammer this year. Cote will be back with the Phantoms or in the Flyers' front office before November. Great guy, but he's from another era I think. You guys are complaining a lot here (as usual for Philly fans), but I think most of the holes from last season have been plugged - the Flyers now have the best D-corp in the league bar none, the Flyers still have pretty much all of the depth at forward they had from last year - which was already probably in the top 5 or so in the league, and if you remember, goaltending from Boosh and Leighton is what got them to the Stanley Cup Final in the first place. The Flyers have arguably one of the best top-to-bottom rosters in the NHL now that their 3rd D-pairing has been fixed, still have their two league leading goalies from the playoffs last year, and still kept almost everybody up front. I would have kept Asham over signing Shelley, but that's about the only thing I'd have done different. I can't wait to see this team destroy the rest of the Eastern Conference this year. Cheer up Flyers fans - this is an EXCELLENT roster, and the Flyers will once again be contenders this coming season.
I hear a lot of people on here talk about why dont we get rid of these so call fighters and bring ppl who can play. Fighting will always be in hockey. It's a straight up blue collar mans sport. Since a lot of u are looking for finesse and beauty in hockey there is always figure skating for u to watch. Flyers_70
I agree 100% with Champanderson. Carcillo game improved tremendously when he played on Richards line. I can see Giroux, Richards and Carcillo do well as it did for the Gags/Richards line last season Flyers_70
all i want for chirtmas is a starting goalie hands down after powe we have the best all around defense in the nhl 15 -20 shots a game at most get that goalie and yes lord stanley we will take your cup imo dclarke76
I agree with a lot of you. Carcillo if on the right line can put in 20-30 goals. He just needs Gretzky and Lemieux to come back and play with him. He is an average 3rd liner that they try to put on the top lines. What he brings is a big hit followed buy 3 penalties for being an idiot. Isn't that Hartnell's job when he can stay on his skates long enugh to hit someone. And Carcillo did have a big goal for us, but 1 goal does not make a season. Podein- Happy, but he deserves more. Look what others earn for putting in much less effort.
Asham? WCgrad77
I like carbomb (He has played with intensity when the "Ice Capades" was in full bloom. Pow 2. But would someone please explain whether we can send Walker to AHL to get cap relief for his 1.7 Shell too! Mez was awful in Tampa. Why overpay for him? Is Barber still in Tampa? If we can move Walker I can understand Gags. Is Barber still in Tampa? He was so good when he came back from injury, but he was a no show in season and very very soft. Different player in run. Is Barber still in Tampa?. LaCroix,Nolet,Gendron- It's good to see Powe back next year, he's fast and he always hustles. The Flyers got Shelley to have someone equal to Godard on the Pens and Boogaard on the Rangers. Those guys are too big for Carcillo to mess with. But Carcillo doesn't have the skill to play with Richie. I saw the 87 Cup Finals last night on the NHL channel. It was nice to see Hexie and Howe playing against the Oilers. Gene Hart was narrating....very nice.
Gotta get rid of 6 forwards and get 4 more defensemen and then Homer's plan will be in place. Who needs a goalie when you can have a team of defensemen. Great plan! Oh and the older and slower they are, the better! younged
DUFFERS - Why spend money on Shelley, Carcillo, and Cote? Because this is still hockey - man's sport. Only one team wins the Cup. So should all teams not have tough guys and make the regular season boring and turn this into Cammi Granato style hockey? The Blackhawks are the Stanley Cup champs and they aquired 6'8'' John Scott. Look how far the Caps got in the playoffs with their "team toughness" farce. Ferrell31
Why didn't they sign him for more than one year? Probably because Powe is restricted next year too. If some other team wants him, they will have to overpay Powe, because the Flyers can elect to match the offer or take other compensation, usually draft picks. Next year, it might be worthwhile to sign Powe long-term. buttermilk67- Can't agree with Don Cherry more on Carcillo...watch the whole thing...he's a disgrace to the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGQKhkAEENc&feature=related
Wait, we still have Cote? WHY??? GET RID OF HIM! DrM
ChampAnderson: Carcillo can score 20 goals in the NHL based on what? The career high 12 he scored in PHO? I give him12-15 max and think 20 is a huge leap to project. It just doesn't happen. If it does, I will herlad that trade as one of Homer's best; otherwise, it's another blunder to give Carbomb a raise, overpay Shelly,AND resign Powe. Powe hasn't proven he can score in ANY league. Speed is everywhere (Justin Williams, Bronko R, Jared Ross) but speed doesn't = goals. MichaelZoe
why only one year for Powe at such a low salary hit----why not 2/3 years---he is a very good 3rd/4th line player----makes no sense to me---plus he is only 25 years old or so. Look for Andreas Nodl to make some noise this pre-season. Romus
hey Chief, what great goalies are available? or who would you be willing to trade to get one? Roy and Hasek and in their 50s last I checked, or maybe you're expecting one of the other teams to trade us their good goalie just to help us out--geez, if Kolb sucks maybe the Patriots will trade us Brady, just bec "we need a QB". Just about everybody "needs a goalie", but Leighton is fine with good help in front of him. btb
I agree with conceptual_bro, and think Testuwide has a shot at the roster (if there is cap space). RichieRocks
I agree with Champ, and pj he was scracthed because of injury for quite a few of those games. Carcillo may not be everyone's favorite, but i love what he brings. He's our version of Darcy Tucker..we haven't had a guy like him since the Rat! I'm all aboot Carcillo! Now please get a NON AHL goalie!! Leighton is a AHL lifer or a backup at best, as i've said many times with that forcefield defense i'm putting up his numbers. JohnnyN
I think that stat on cap space is misleading.....if they drop a D to the Phantoms, much more money avail. beefbr
wish they wouldve signed him for longer. powe is a great young 4th liner who is only gonna get better. and im looking forward to watching carcillo this year. he made huge strides in his game last year so let's just wait and see. now if there were only a way to get rid of shelley and walker. i just can't figure either of those moves out. mrkmcc
What Powe brings to the team is a steal for that money. He is always moving his feet, isn't afraid to throw a check (even if it means he is the only one who falls) and never takes dumb penalties. Also, if signing Shelly was a move to develop Carcillo... waste of time. This team doesn't need 'carbomb.' But we have him...(sadface). finalsay665
Not forgetting Carcillo's gamewinnner, Michael, remembering that he was scratched for most of the finals vs Chicago though pjmcd14
Everybody forgets Carcillo's game winner in OT vs the Devils - michaelthegreat- I still think the flyers need a goalie.
Captain obvious here...by far not the worst signing of the off season. With Betts out until November Powe will be the fourth line center and one of the PK guys...Shelley, Carcillo, & Walker sure won't take Betts' spot as a PK guy. 67Flyer
sorry to break it to you carcillo haters, but danny will be right back alongside his fellow ontario buddy mike richards. shelley takes a lot of pressure of carcillo. look for his majors to go way down. despite the haters, carcillo has some talent other than racking up PIMs. he can score 20 goals on the right line. much like hartnell, carcillo will provide the sandpaper for richards and whatever R wing he is given. ChampAnderson
If Testwuide has a strong enough camp to take a spot on the team, Walker or Bartulis will be moved somehow. Cote's gotta be waived. conceptual_bro
There has to be another move, right? They're going to carry 8 dmen? I've got to think they're going to waive Cote and give one of their young guys a chance as the extra forward, not that I don't appreciate everything Cote has given this team. HandNik- Why again are they wasting 2.725 million in cap space to Shelley, Carcillo, and Cote? Granted, Cote will most likely (one would think) be either bought out or sent to the minors, but that still leaves 2.175 in cap space tied up between 2 guys who will play no more than 5 minutes per game in the playoffs. Then there's the utterly ridiculous 1.7 mill that the 7th defenseman will be occupying. Looks like Holmgren slept through Salary Cap 101. duffers
yippee. stormrider
