Ray Emery returned to practice on Monday.

For the first time since undergoing abdominal surgery on Dec. 9, Ray Emery was back on the ice with a few teammates for a light skate at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees.

Emery alternated shots with Brian Boucher from Riley Cote, Mika Pyorala and Danny Syvret.

Boucher backed up Michael Leighton in Sunday’s win in Long Island but said that he wasn’t ready to play in a game yet. A point blank shot from Florida’s Michael Frolik last Monday cut open his right ring finger, requiring stitches. Boucher said that when he took shots, the cut – which is on his blocker (stick holding) hand – the vibrations from his stick reverberated through his hand.

Boucher could be ready to play on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers.

Leighton, meanwhile, has won his first three starts in a Flyers uniform since 2006-07 with an impressive .932 save percentage.

The Flyers will have a log jam at goalie when both Boucher and Emery are healthy. Leighton would likely be loaned to Adirondack, where he could cut into the playing time of Johan Backlund.

Emery exited practice after just 45 minutes of shooting, while Boucher remained on the ice with Sunday’s two healthy scratches (Pyorala and Cote) and call-up Syvret.

Emery’s original timetable was six weeks from the surgery, which would put his return date sometime around Jan. 20. He could be ahead of schedule. We will update after practice.

Briere vs. Biron
After he roasted former teammate and close friend Marty Biron with a wicked top shelf wrister on Sunday, which gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead, Danny Briere said he doesn’t think he has an advantage playing against Biron.

The two played together for six consecutive years in Buffalo and Philadelphia.

"I think it goes both ways,” Briere said. “He knows where I like to shoot he knopws what I like to do. But I also know a little bit about him. I guess it depends on the situation and whoever can think the quickest."

With the way Leighton has been playing, I would hold off on sending him to Adirondack...why not keep him up and send Boucher down. I haven't been overly impressed with his play so far.

Leighton has been playing like his career depends on it, which it actually just might. Keep riding this horse until he crashes back to Earth.

Homer should try to send Boucher to montreal for Halak. Halak wants out and he gets less money than Boucher. Emery was very good before he got hurt and Boucher has been o.k....Leighton is not a #1 goalie. they need a solid backup for Emery...Halak is that and maybe more.

What are you people talking about?? Boosh was playing well, the team in front of him was not giving him any goal support.. After the game in Colorado on November 23rd, the flyers scored 3 or more goals in only 4 of 16 games. They scored either 1 or zero goals in 10 of those 16 games. As much as I would like to give credit to Leighton, the fact of the matter is the team has finally started scoring goals again and they have done against bad teams in back to back games, Lightning (12th) and Hurricanes (15th) and Isles(13th) , win 2-1. No goalie would have a winning record under the previous conditions and yet Boucher was keeping them in games... The latest wins have nothing to do with goaltending, FLYERS JUST FINALLY STARTED SCORING!

Boosh has played well, the team has not played well in front of him. The choice between Boosh and Leighton is closer than it appears, and I think you go with the hot hand and give emery plenty of time for a full recovery. Every time the Flyers try to hurry an abdominal strain, it always ends up with a new injury as bad as the first. Face facts, we don't really have the goaltender solution in place yet, but we do have several very good pieces to work with in the meantime. If Emery ever finds his "A" game and keeps it, he has the talent, but that is a big IF.

That's pretty harsh... During December, when Boucher handled all the tending, the Flyers only scored more than one goal 4 times. In those games, they were 2-1-1. Don't blame Boucher for December.

I'd rather have Boucher in net for the Winter Classic than Leighton. I mean, good job dude, you looked pretty good over the past 3 games. But we need Boucher right now as the schedule starts to get tougher.

Not a big fan of Halak - I've seen him play some really bad games for Montreal - though he is more athletic in net than Boucher. Once Emery is healed, he hopefully will be back playing the way he played earlier in the season. If that's the case, there's no real reason to trade Boucher who was signed to be a backup. Let Boucher and Leighton fight it out over who's Number Two.

Boucher was outplaying Emery, so send Emery down. Or keep him on IR under whatever pretense is necessary.

Some of you people commenting are insane. Boosh has been really solid in net during Emery's absence. Emery was playing great until the injury, and now they also have Leighton who was not doing so great in Carolina but seems to be doing just fine here. I still see it as Emery/Boucher though. Tough decision in goal tending for once!

Neither goalie should be a starter in this league.
