Disciplinary hearing for B. Schenn
Frank Seravalli
Flyers forward Brayden Schenn has the dubious distinction of being the subject of the NHL's first supplemental disciplinary hearing of this young season.
According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, Schenn will have a hearing with NHL vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss his second period hit on New Jersey's Anton Volchenkov. The hearing will take place over the phone.
Video of Schenn's hit on Volchenkov is below.
After leaving the bench, Schenn skated directly toward Volchenkov and made contact as soon as Volchenkov released the puck. The question is whether Schenn left his feet before delivering the hit, as players must have their skates grounded in the ice to do so. Schenn also does make a bit of contact with Volchenkov's head.
There was no penalty call on the play and Volchenkov was not injured.
Schenn has never been suspended and is not a repeat offender in the NHL's eyes. Schenn and Volchenkov do have a bit of history, though, as Volchenkov drilled Schenn with a clean hit behind the Devils' net in Game 5 of the Flyers/Devils playoff series on May 8, 2012. (That video is here.)
Previously, the NHL's maximum fine for a hit was $2,500. Under the new CBA, first time offenders can be fined a maximum of $10,000. It will be interesting to see the 'Shanahammer' in action for the first time this season, perhaps trying to send a message to the rest of the league.

Probably should have been a charging penalty. CoettaGarner25- Agreed - Our guy left his feet & hit the opposing player up high. Hate to say it but he'll probably get a couple of games.

NHL cracking down on legal checks now? Shanahan's "justice" has been meted out so unevenly it's truly an injustice! TruthTeller01- Shanahan's "discipline" is an absolute joke. This Shea Weber hit on Henrik Zetterberg in last year's playoffs was not a cause for suspension. Even though Weber hit in in the head twice and cracked his visor:

Yes, looked like a charge to me, too. Tough to tell if he left his feet, maybe. I don't think the Shanahammer is going to wait to mete out his kind of justice. PhillySubsMac
If he doesn't leave his feet, this isn't even a discussion. It was a pretty good hit otherwise. Shanahan hates the Flyers so he'll get a 2-game suspension. Meanwhile, how many players has Volchenkov hurt with his "legal" hip checking? thegamepa
Yet Neal got what, 1 game last year for his hit on Couturier in game 3? Don't forget he took Giroux out a middle later too. Matt
Poor Volchenkov? Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.Volchenkov is the ultimate cheap artist! The Flyers problem is not forechecking nearly enough. quigly46
Shanahan is terrible at that job. League stars and players on his former teams have nothing to fear from him. Malkin concusses 2 flyers last year and not even a hearing. What qualifications does this former cheap shot artist have to do this job? Sidewinder7
Definitely left his feet. Couldn't believe it wasn't called as it happened right in front of ref. wilcowaits
It was a charge, he should have gotten 2 mins, that's all. This hearing reeks. theroe2.0
Real loss if he doesn't play. What firepower on this team. FlyersLosersFor38Years- should have been a penalty, should not be a suspension but who knows anymore. there's no consistency. oh and no one "hates" the flyers. stop the whining. it's embarassing.
Shanahan is a total joke in his role. Biased and uneven, completely subjective when issuing penalties. SDFlyer
