The Ilya Kovalchuk sweepstakes are over.

For the Flyers, the Atlantic Division just got a whole lot tougher.

The New Jersey Devils, who lead the division by one point over Pittsburgh and 13 points over the Flyers, acquired Kovalchuk on Monday night.

Kovalchuk was shipped to New Jersey with Anssi Salmela and their 2010 2nd round pick for Niclas Bergfors, Johnny Oduya, Patrice Cormier, 2010 1st round pick and their 2nd round pick.

Read more about the deal and how the Flyers played into it in Friday’s Daily News.

Holmgren continues to show how completely dumb he is, devils practically gave up nothing for him. I would of gladly given up carter but the guys we could of got rid of have NTC's. I've seen sleeping monkeys who are smarter.

Well our upcoming home and home aginst them just got a lot more interesting. Hartnell, Briere, and Gagne are our achilles heel(s). Too much money and wasted ice time for what they give us.

Once again a philly team falls short. There is no way the flyers will win anything this year. A) they wont make it past the Penguins, B) they wont make it past the capitals, and no C) they wont make it past the Devils. Good Job Homer! for coming up short once again.

The guy is a rental, already made it clear he wants max money. He turned down 110 million, for what to win?? Euro's play for the cash...Oduya and 1st rounder, and no chance at resigning him. good luck.

O yea blame the flyers for not getting this guy. Them and the other 30 teams are failures too then. If they had the chips and cap space it woulda been done. They went all in on pronger...did we forget that?

Expect at least 5 years until there's any chance of a Cup for the Flyers. Second rate talent compared to Pittsburgh and Washington. And their talent is as young or younger than the Flyboys'. NJ and NY are every bit as good and still have prospects in their systems. Not only do the Flyers have nada on the farm, they don't have even the hope of finding help in the draft now that Frankenstein has given away all the early round picks. The Sixers have a better chance of going somewhere. Thank Gof for the Phillies.

carter is the only movable flyer without a no trade clause, were you willing to give him up for a rental player for a year? absolutely not, you people don't know hockey. would it be great to have him, yes. but fact of the matter is we didnt have the cap space to sign him long term. everybody hates on holmgren but look at the oilers, they are OVER the cap and have no chance at the playoffs this year.

Giving up Carter would have been foolish. Especially if we can't sign him (which we wouldn't be able to unless we moved a bunch more salary). Hartnell, Briere and Gagne's contracts are going to kill this team in the end. No one will taken them on.
