Cote retires; named assistant coach with Phantoms

POSTED: Monday, August 9, 2010, 2:11 PM

Flyers forward Riley Cote has retired and will become an assistant coach with the Adirondack Phantoms, according to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

Cote, 30, played 156 games with the Flyers. He had one goal, six assists and 411 penalty minutes. He played three seasons with the Phantoms, when the Flyers’ AHL affiliate was based in Philadelphia.

Cote will join head coach Greg Gilbert and associate coach Kjell Samuelsson on the Phantoms’ coaching staff.

“I am really excited about this coaching opportunity,” Cote said in a statement. “I love Philly and the Flyers. I was so proud to be a Flyer and tried to best represent that every time I pulled the orange and black jersey over my head.

“Now it’s time for me to turn the page and start a new chapter in my life. I will do the best job I can do to help teach and develop all the players in Glens Falls on and off the ice. I'm looking forward to a new challenge in life.”

Holmgren said about Cote, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba: “We are pleased to add Riley to our coaching staff in Glens Falls,” Holmgren said. “Riley’s dedication, perseverance and passion for the game of hockey are beyond reproach. We believe he will be a good young coach, and his knowledge and experience will be very beneficial in the development of our young prospects.”

Jody Shelley didn't make him expendable, Carcillo and Asham did. I never really got Cote and how he hung onto a roster spot for such a long time. That era is gone from hockey. Your fighters are going to have to be able to play the game too. It is for this reason that I also do not understand why we were so inclined to sign Jody Shelley. I guess that is 2 less goals scored against the Flyers this year.

Ok, I had with the "he cant fight, blah blah blah" comments....He was asked EVERY stinking night to go fight guys that were 6-8 inches taller and 20-25 lbs heavier, it was unfair to ask him to do that!!..He was a good soldier, he did what he could to protect his teammates and thats all you can ask from someone., I would like to see all the posters here take on that role!!...Ask any player who they thought were the toughest pound for pound I am certain his name gets mentioned...I have said for yrs that he is a GREAT 2nd fighter but u cant have him fight the heavyweights, that was HOMERS fault....Now we have the heavyweight and wait to you see how danny carbomb does now that he can fight the guys HE IS SUPPOSED to fight...And for the nerds to dont like the fighting, you need something for 90$ a ticket in the middle of december and what to see how much more the these division games get!!...

Riley is an awesome guy. A Phantom and Flyer for life, he was really nice to my kids during an autography session during his rookie year with the Flyers. Good things happen to good people...and this is good for him. Congrats Riley!

I know that a lot of Flyer fans don't like Riley Cote, but I always admired his courage. He would fight anyone...Georges Laraque...anyone it never mattered to Riley. I'm glad the Flyers are keeping him in the organization...he's one of bravest ever to wear orange and black.

Best of luck, Riley. You gave it your best, that's all anyone could ask. Now go teach the kids how to clean clocks.

This is a class move all around. Cote gets a job as a reward for being a dedicated Flyer despite getting no time on the ice. Cote appreciated every minute of his time in the NHL (always notice how he was in the pre-game skate even when scratched? most guys on the team would not even warm up under those circumstances, but Cote always did just to be out there with his teammates), and he deserved this. Bravo Homer. Thanks for the hard work Cote.

i'd like to take this opportunity to thank Riley for his services as a flyer. "CROSSI" was dead on with comments (besides the last sentence) in how Cote was perceived around the league. Cote went toe to toe and didn't shy away from anyone or any punch, which is why the big boys had such respect for him. his martial arts skills helped him grapple and counter which was fun to watch. YES he was a middle weight, YES he lost PLENTY of fights, but the man dedicated his mind, body, and soul to the team we love, which counts for something. consumate team player, apparently a really decent guy, and a guy with serious fehckin balls. MUCH APPRECIATED Riley, now time to search your name on youtube and take it all in.

When you take as many as he did for the organization,it's nice to see the organization take care of one of it's own as they always do. Best of luck.

Asham isn't coming back. They have no space for him after Carcillo signed.
