Coburn denies report about contract

POSTED: Thursday, April 1, 2010, 2:37 PM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Braydon Coburn said he was surprised to hear about a report earlier this week that said his agent declined to negotiate a contract extension with the Flyers this season.

The report said Coburn, due to be a restricted free agent this offseason, declined a Flyers offer and chose to wait until after the Flyers’ season was over to focus on a new deal.

“I don’t know where you heard that,” Coburn said. “I don’t think my agent and [Paul Holmgren] have discussed a contract at all this year. I’m a restricted free agent, so I’m Flyers’ property.

“If it is true, it wasn’t run by me. I don’t know anything about it.”

Since Lukas Krajicek joined the Flyers on Feb. 1, Coburn’s ice time dropped nearly five minutes per game for the next 18 games. Since March 21, Coburn is closer to the 22 minutes per game he was playing before Krajicek’s signing.

With six games left, Coburn is on pace for his worst season as a Flyer with 5 goals and 18 points, compared to the 36 points he posted two seasons ago. He is also a minus-6 this season compared to the combined plus-24 he was over the last two years.

Coburn, 25, is eligible for salary arbitration with more than four years of NHL service. He earns $1.3 million this season.

ALSO: Scott Hartnell will play tonight against the Islanders, according to Peter Laviolette. Hartnell missed the Flyers’ practice on Wednesday for personal reasons but participated in this morning’s pre-game skate … Ryan Parent will be a healthy scratch … Riley Cote will remain in the lineup.

FAST FACT: The Flyers have a 15-game winning streak over the Islanders. Former Flyers goalie Marty Biron, who will start tonight for New York, is 9-3-0 in those games (9-0 as a Flyer, 0-3 as an Islander).

I hope Hartnell's personal reason was to get his stupid Sideshow Bob hairdo cut.

There is nobody on the Phantoms that we could play instead of Cote? Not Matsumoto, or Laliberte? What about Pyorala or Maroon?

Cote serves a purpose. We already have Giroux and Powe and VanRiemsdyk not producing, do we need to have another player bringing nothing to the table?

really? we don't have anyone better than Cote to dress tonight? We can't get a look at Stefan Legein before the playoffs (if made)...We still trying to figure out what cote brings to the table..well, I guess it has been a while since his last pummelling..that's always fun to watch

What purpose does Cote serve? He's got virtually zero hockey ability and is only good for fighting (and his charity work), which Asham or Lappy can easily handle if necessary. We need goals, not 5 minute fighting majors.

///still trying to figure out what cote brings to the table/// The only thing that Cote should bring to the table is another fork or a pitcher of water.

Agree with srf466 and missuhextall. It's a bummer, but Parent is BRUTAL. Would love to see Sloane or Mormina brought up and Parent put on the shelf.

Serious Truth B. Told??? No disrespect to the Sloan family - who pumps a lot of money to the local area (including local professional sports teams) - however David Sloane is not an NHL defenseman.

He's having his worst year in years... If the Flyers had actually offered him an extension, and his agent turned it down without telling him, he'd fire that agent, don't you think? This has to be a bogus story. Who'd offer Coburn anything right now?

The guy's still only 25...give him a few more years to develop.

Drexelkpr - it would be a move more to shake up Parent and get somebody in their who is going to relish the opportunity and "leave it all out on the ice" when he's in the game. At this point, I would try anything to get Parent going, including sending down to the Phantoms (assuming his contract permits that) to gain some confidence.

Coburn should be paying the Flyers to play him.

Who the heck is Coburn to demand anything? They better NOT sign him. He's awful. Stretch run, fighting to make the playoffs, and Riley Cote is stealing ice time. This team is a mess. They don't deserve a playoff spot. But as long as they make the playoffs, everything's fine, right?

The Flyers will offer him a 10% raise, or they will lose his rights.

The flyers made the wrong move at the trade deadline by putting Syvret on waivers so Parent could keep his spot. The few games I watched Syvret play, he was a ton better than Parent. Trade him back to Nashville.

And they had the chance to trade Coburn & Parent before the deadline... Too bad nobody wanted them, and with good reason. Bring back Syvret, and make sure to sign Krajicek.
