ST. PAUL, Minn. -- If you have been looking for a reason, aside from sheer disappointment, that Jeff Carter has yet to publicly address his stunning trade to Columbus on Thursday, listen to his agent.

Carter’s agent, Philadelphia based Rick Curran, told the Columbus Dispatch on Friday that Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren lied to Carter earlier in the week in a face-to-face meeting.

“He is disappointed,” Curran said on Friday morning in the Minneapolis Hilton lobby. “But that’s no reflection of Columbus. It’s more that he made a commitment to Philadelphia.”

Curran said that commitment started three years ago when his client was presented with an offer sheet when he was a restricted free agent. Carter declined.

“He had the opportunity to go somewhere on an offer sheet,” Curran said. “The Flyers told him that he would be one of their cornerstone players.”

Then, last November, in the final year of his 3-year, $15 million deal, the Flyers approached Carter to sign a long-term deal.

“They said that they would need some help on the AAV [average annual value] of the deal [a longer deal to produce a lower cap number],” Curran said. “He said that he liked it here [in Philadelphia] and liked his teammates. He said that if they wanted him, he would make the commitment.”

Carter, 26, inked an 11-year, $58 million deal on Nov. 13, 2010. He surely could have earned more on the open market. Instead, Carter did what he could to stay in Philly.

Last summer, he purchased a new beach house in Sea Isle City, N.J., fully expecting to be in the area for the duration of his career. That all changed on Thursday, when his life was turned upside down on Friday.

His no-trade clause was set to kick in on July 1, 2012.

The shocking part is that Carter and Holmgren met face-to-face earlier in the week, to discuss the apparent rumors, and Holmgren re-assured Carter he was not being moved.

Carter had long been discussed as an option for the Flyers to move once they acquired Ilya Bryzgalov’s rights on June 7. It was apparent that they would need to move a significant chunk of salary in order to sign the free agent goaltender. Carter’s cap number was the only fit.

“Jeff called me and asked about the rumors two weeks ago,” Curran said. “He figured teams were asking about him anyways. I called Paul and I asked him if this is something we should be concerned about.

“Paul assured me that there was nothing to worry about, that they weren’t interested in trading Jeff. He told me that Jeff could come in and meet with him to tell him the same things. And he did. He assured him that they weren’t trading him.”

Rumored or not, you can imagine Carter’s shock when he heard about the trade on Thursday.

i feel bad for him, as a player he was pretty good, as a person i don't know him. But the deal he signed he should of had a no movement clause in it. business is just that, business. The deal they got for him was way too much to pass up. Believe me that these two deals makes the flyers a ton better. And there is more to be done in weeks to come, mark my worthless words.

Carter and Richards weren't interested in playing hockey here. They preferred the rock-star lifestyle and the Flyers decided to move on (thankfully). Great moves by Holmgren; now we'll have guys who show up to practice sober.

At least Richards is by the beach, but Carter is stuck in OSU land.

Columbus is a great city. It is now the largest city in Ohio, and it's in the top 15 largest cities in the country. It is also home to many huge corporations. Try doing some research before you post something so stupid!

Columbus is an up and coming city, not only in Ohio but the US. In the not to be near future, it will pass Cleveland and Cincinnati as for economic growth.

    To the knuckleheads defending Columbus:
DuckeyeFan, i believe you're the one who needs to do the research, last time I checked Columbus was still not by the beach. And if your defense of this landlocked lame excuse for a city is its size(which is, to use your word, a "stupid" point), you might wanna check out where LA falls on the largest cities list, stupid!
And Romus, where do I start? I'm sure Columbus is neato, you nerd! being the largest city in Ohio is the equivalent to being the coolest guy in the marching band. And the phrase you used, "not to be near future", is an embarrassment to yourself and your family. And if you don't understand why, I can only hope you stay in Ohio.

"Curran said that commitment started three years ago when his client was presented with an offer sheet when he was a restricted free agent. Carter declined."

Well since Carter signed that 3-year contract on June 28th, how in the world did someone else present an offer sheet to him before the start of free agency. You should have know that Frank.

Hearing this kind of thing does not surprise me. I've said all along that Carter's deal was a sweetheart of a contract for his services. He did something nice for this city and team and got screwed. I'm very disappointed.

C'mon Frank, are you head of Jeff Carter's Fan Club? He should man up, smile for the cameras, thank Philly for their support and say he can't wait to get to Columbus. Instead...this. Man up, Jeff.

You people are really missing the boat. You sign a long term contract for a reason. His mistake was giving in on the no trade contract. The Flyers management led by that horsesh-t Snider doesn't give a rats behind about his players other then the old alumni because he never had to layout big bucks for them and believe they can't stand him either. Holmgren's a puppet who does what he's told no matter how much he has to lie.Good luck to Carter who has now a better chance to win a cup in Columbus then the Flyers do here. Flyer fans welcome to mediocrcey
