Carcillo files for arbitration; Preseason sched.
While most Americans were busy enjoying the festivities surrounding the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Canadian-born forward Dan Carcillo elected to file for salary arbitration by the 5 o’clock deadline yesterday.
Carcillo, a restricted free agent, declined to accept the Flyers’ qualifying offer from June 28 – which included at least a mandatory 5-percent raise from last year’s salary.
Per the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, Carcillo was due a minimum of $984,375 for this upcoming season – up from the $937,500 he earned last season.
Likely based on the fact that Carcillo spent a good chunk of last year on the Flyers’ top line with Mike Richards, Carcillo was probably hoping for a raise somewhere in the $1.5 million range. Watching Jody Shelley – a player with less skill and similar intangibles – ink a three-year, $3.3 million deal could have only supported his claim.
Shelley had two goals, seven assists and 115 penalty minutes in 57 games with the Rangers and Sharks last year. Carcillo posted 10 goals, 12 assists and 207 penalty minutes in 76 games with the Flyers.
Carcillo and the Flyers will meet before an arbitrator sometime between July 20 and Aug. 4, where each side has 90 minutes to present their case against the other. Both sides can continue to negotiate up until the hearing.
The Flyers can elect to head to arbitration today with their remaining restricted free agents: Darroll Powe, David Laliberte and Matt Clackson.
ALSO, the Flyers announced their preseason schedule today - which begins just a couple months from now in September. They will open training camp on Sept. 17 in Voorhees.

Sept. 23: Flyers vs. Toronto, 7:00 pm, John Labatt Center, London, Ontario

THIS is why the Shelley signing is bogus. Skill guys and guys with potential make more than Fighters. You're asking your stars to take hometown discounts while you overpay your tough guys? Nothing against Shelley but young up & Coming guys are looking to get paid and it's getting harder and harder to make that happen. flyler
Danny Carbomb is a goner now. Romus- I can honestly say that I really do not understand the Shelley signing (or the Matsumoto trade for that matter). I don't disagree with carbomb ... he is probably a better player than Shelley...certainly a capable scrapper and does have reasonable hands.
maybe danny is just faking his filing...like he fakes getting hit in the face all season...good riddins to this no class diving punk. Sign Asham who plays the same game, if not better, and stays disciplined. Shelley still makes no sense to me either. Aren't we trying win a cup...fighting can't be your only skill these days..why take a roster spot up, and expensive one at that, with a guy who won't play in the playoffs. pmolishus
if i recall correctly carcillo took a lot of stupid penalties and had no reason being on a top line. The guy was a scratch in the finals, that should tell you something and im sure that will be mentioned in the arbitration. I agree with the others though, Shelley was a bad signing, cant believe how much they payed for that guy. shanehockey28
Shelley is a big mistake.Asham should of been resigned. wlgj- I must say however that I LOVE the way Homer fed it to the Pens with the Hamhius deal. He knew Hamhius wasn't signing with the Pens and nabbed a 3rd rounder... That was smooth. I can only hope he has some other method to his madness with this Shelley deal.
Shelley is a smarter player who will take less penalties than carbomb. Skills are comparable. Shelley deal was bad, but I wouldn't rather have him than carbomb. therev- @ shanehockey The guy was a scratch in the finals because he was injured. He underwent surgery immediately after the finals for a sports hernia. Lavy even said it was his hardest decision in the finals, which is telling, considering how many goaltending decisions he had to make. Mike P
If Homer were so smart, he never would have traded Parent for the rights to someone obviously intent on going FA! Getting the pick was simply CYA. JBinPA
I just want to know why we keep changing the name of that Center built to replace the Spectrum. Isn't this like the fourth name in 15 years? buttermilk67
Show this clown the door. He's lucky to be making above minimum wage! Look at how many fights there were during ALL of the playoffs. This is the real season. Who gives a F@#* what he did during the regular season. I think management has lost sight of this with the choices they've made for quite awhile now. Gone are the winning days of "The Goon". BigShow
Carcillo was too mentally unstable/out of control to keep in the lineup in the Finals when it counted which is what diminished his value. Bermar
It boils down to Carcillo not fighting Colton Orr in the Toronto game. Period. And the fact that Mikael Pylora and Carcillo played on the first line with Richards is more of a condemnation of Holmgrem's lack of understanding of Richards than praise for either player. Shelly was added to fight Orr and now Derrick "I broke Fedoruk's Face" Boogard 4-6 times a year and get us through the tough long season - agree or not -- that's the reason. Crosby got Bill Guerin as a mentor and then made two trips to the Cup, winning once. Richards got a mix of good, bad, injured and ugly. Let Carcillo walk and re-sign Asham. Powe has speed and absolutely no history of scoring ability. And don't forget, Lappy might not make it through another season after that horrific head trauma. We all know how those concussions creep back. MichaelZoe
Matsumoto is a strange one...they never called him up despite leading the Phantoms in several scoring categories over the years. Something wrong there. MichaelZoe
