Broken leg for Max Talbot

If the Flyers are going to make a surprising sprint toward the Stanley Cup playoffs, they will do without forward Max Talbot.

The Flyers announced on Monday morning that Talbot will be out indefinitely with a fractured left leg. His season - or, at least regular season - is likely all but over.

Talbot crashed into the boards on Sunday night against Washington while trying to make a routine body check. It was unclear exactly how he sustained the injury, but Talbot did lead into the boards with his knee after making initial contact with defenseman Mike Green. Talbot immediately hit the ice and could not put any pressure on the left leg. He needed to be carried to the locker room by the Flyers' training staff.

It remains unclear at this point whether Talbot might need surgery to repair the fracture.

What is also unclear is how Talbot's injury will affect Paul Holmgren's plans before Wednesday's trade deadline. The Flyers are expected to remain 'status quo,' and see whether they can make a run as currently assembled. They awoke on Monday only two points back of a playoff spot.

Talbot had also generated interest himself on the trade market. Boston and Edmonton are among two of the teams who have inquired about Talbot, according to sources, but they were rebuffed by Holmgren.

Talbot, 29, was one of five Flyers to skate in all 35 games this season. He has three seasons remaining on his contract at $1.75 million per year. Talbot has been one of the Flyers' best players of late, collecting four goals in his last nine games in addition to his usual consistent play defensively and on the penalty kill.

While Talbot's injury is certainly a bad break for the Flyers, the fracture at least rules out more damaging Achilles tendon or knee issues. Talbot struggled with a knee injury during his six-year career in Pittsburgh.

There has been no timetable set for Talbot yet, according to the Flyers.

The Flyers should change their logo to a wheelchair and the team name to the Injuries.

Flyers will need to say the course. They can be sellers nobody wants to but broken goods or talentless players. Vorechek might be the only player with value right now on this team.

Time to really go into the tank and continue losing with unabashed regularity. We need a top 4 pick.

I hope Max makes a full quick recovery. The Flyers need his "lead by example" leadership. Max is a core player for the Flyers (in my opinion).

Talbot has looked really bad this year until recently. Lately he was playing like last year. Quicker and much better with the puck...and great defensively. Just as he was hitting his stride, he goes down. I feel bad for him. The Flyers will miss him.
