Betts signs 2-year extension

POSTED: Friday, February 12, 2010, 1:44 PM

The Flyers signed center Blair Betts to a multiyear contract extension, believed to be for 2 years.

“Blair has been a valuable addition to our team this year,” general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. “He has a strong work ethic and plays an important role on our team. We are pleased to have him under contract for the future.”

Betts, 29, has six goals and four assists for 10 points and 12 penalty minutes in 39 games in his first season with the Flyers. He has also missed 19 games due to injury.

“I’m really happy with the new contract,” said Betts. “It was exactly what I was looking for. I was glad that the Flyers were willing to give me a couple years and show some commitment to me.”

Betts was invited to Flyers training camp on a pro try-out basis and signed a 1-year contract on Oct. 1. Last season, he recorded six goals and four assists for 10 points and 16 penalty minutes in 81 games with the New York Rangers.

You know how it works around here. He's gonna mess up his shoulder against the Habs tonight.

Great move, this guy is a warrior. Now dump Hartnell and get something that can puck the puck in the net.

Ha that was pretty funny but I certainly hope not. If everyone else on this team played as hard as Betts, there'd be three million of us sitting on Broad Street in June watching the team drive by with the Cup.

Good move. I am sure they didn't have to use up much cap space. Let's hope he can stay healthy!

Good stuff, congrats Betts. I like watching this guy along with the rest of our 3rd and 4th lines. Now only if our top 2 lines would play with the heart and determination that these guys do. Maybe its cause they don't have ginormous contrats and they actually play hockey cause they love to. Giroux, Laperriere, Betts, Asham, Carcillo always play hard. I know people hate on Carcy but look at it this way. He's a lot better than having Cote out there. Nice to see someone who can play hockey and win fights.

@th, if you're referring to Emery... Lavi sat him for 2 or 3 more games AFTER the doctors cleared him. He didn't come back too early. Sometimes injuries just happen. If you really want to place blame, and you seem like that type of person, blame Lavi for starting him in 8 straight games when he decided to finally let Emery play.
