Backlund to Phantoms

Goaltender Johan Backlund sent to the Phantoms.

The Flyers made their latest roster move before tonight's preseason contest against the Devils at the Wachovia Center.

They loaned goaltender Johan Backlund to the Phantoms, cutting their roster down to 28 players remaining in training camp.

Backlund was Flyers' third goalie for most of camp. He appeared in just one preseason game, a 4-0 loss to Toronto, in which he stopped 14-of-16 shots in 29-plus minutes of work.

A native of Skelleftea, Sweden, Backlund signed a one-year contract with the Flyers on March 26, 2009, after he appeared in 49 games with Timra of the Swedish Elite League last season, where he posted a 2.56 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and four shutouts. He has spent the last three seasons with Timra (2006-07 through 2008-09), registering a 2.32 GAA, .909 save percentage and 16 shutouts in 145 games.

The regular season begins next Friday, Oct. 2 – in Raleigh, N.C., against the Hurricanes – at which point the Flyers' active roster must be cut to 23 players.
