Claude Giroux skated, facing his own net, toward the goal line before turning to fire what would have been a safe icing had it not landed directly on the stick of Washington's Marcus Johansson.
Understanding the gravity of his mistake, Giroux fell to the ice in disgust, completely separated from his stick with his face buried in his palms. Johansson had broken a 2-2 tie to give Washington and 3-2 lead.
And the Capitals weren't done. Alex Ovechkin scored 26 seconds later, to complete what appeared to be a full and thorough unraveling for the Flyers. Ilya Bryzgalov responded by throwing his water bottle toward the Flyers' bench in anger.
The Flyers’ already struggling blue line took a major hit on Friday, as the club announced lengthy injuries to both Andrej Meszaros and Braydon Coburn.
Meszaros, 27, will undergo surgery on April 2 to repair a torn left rotator cuff. The Flyers said Meszaros will be out indefinitely, but for all intents and purposes, his season is over. The Flyers’ last game is on April 27.
Meszaros already missed 19 games this season with a left shoulder injury. He had surgery in 2009 on the same shoulder to repair a torn labrum. It’s certainly fair to wonder whether his shoulder (and body) will be able to handle the rigors of an NHL season.
In the end, the lure of the hometown winged wheel was too sweet.
Undrafted free agent defenseman Dan DeKeyser, who decided to not return to Western Michigan for his senior season, has agreed to terms with the Detroit Red Wings, according to multiple reports.
The Flyers were seriously interested in adding DeKeyser. Chairman Ed Snider was among the Flyers’ brass to personally pitch Philadelphia to the Detroit native on Wednesday at an hour-long meeting in Toronto. The last free agent Snider personally persued was goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov in 2011.
Andrej Meszaros can't avoid the injury bug.
The Flyers announced on Wednesday that Meszaros will be out indefinitely after re-injuring his left shoulder against the Rangers Tuesday when he was smashed into the boards. His season is likely finished.
Meszaros, 27, missed from Jan. 24 to March 9 with a very similar (if not the same) injury. He returned on March 9 and played 7 games before re-injuring himself late in the third period on Tuesday. He writhed on the bench in pain.

Update: Flyers Danny Briere will be out tonight with an upper-body injury.
PITTSBURGH -- For a five-day layoff in the middle of a playoff hunt, it went just about as well as the Flyers could have hoped.
How well? The Flyers awoke on Sunday the same number of points (5) behind a playoff spot as they did on Tuesday, despite not playing a single game in between. They had the possibility of being nine points back entering Sunday night's grudge match against the Penguins.
Zac Rinaldo has drawn the ire of the outspoken Tampa Bay Lightning, who made their displeasure clear after Rinaldo knocked two of their players out of Monday’s game.
Rinaldo, one of the Flyers' most consistent players recently, said Friday he hadn't read Tampa Bay’s comments.
“I don’t pay attention to what other people say,” Rinaldo said. “It doesn’t bother me at all.”
The Flyers are five points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with only 18 games to go. The Daily News' Frank Seravalli and CineSport's Noah Coslov discuss the Flyers playoff hopes.
