Giroux leads Flyers' 7-0 rout

POSTED: Monday, February 18, 2013, 3:27 PM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- It wasn’t quite “The Shift,” but it may get just get the Flyers back on track.

From the opening puck drop, Flyers captain Claude Giroux backed up his harsh words from Saturday night in Montreal with a 3-point effort on Monday.

Giroux scored 26 seconds into the game off a rebound from Matt Read’s shot, as the Flyers blew the Islanders’ doors off in a 7-0 railroading. His line also scored 15 seconds into the second period of Monday’s matinee, the 4th time they’ve scored in the first minute of a period this season.

Turns out, a trip to the Nassau Mausoleum cures all that ails.

The Flyers are 28-3-1 against the Islanders since 2007, and an impeccable 28-6-1 in the NHL’s second-oldest building since 1999. No truth to the rumor that the Islanders were just saving up energy for the day/night doubleheader they’ve got scheduled.

By the end of the rout, the Flyers had even stopped celebrating their goals. When you take out the Flyers' two major drubbings this season (14-1 combined wins over Florida and the Islanders), they've scored just 31 goals in 14 games (2.2 goals per-game).

Giroux’s line combined for 3 goals and 7 assists. Jake Voracek (4 assists) netted his first career 4-point game in the new-look line combination, Read added a goal and 2 assists and Giroux posted 2 goals and one assist.

However positive the outing, Giroux still boarded the Flyers’ post-game charter flight without his first career regular season hat trick. (He had one in the playoffs last year against the Penguins, the Flyers’ next opponent.)

Monday marked the Flyers’ first shutout of the season and Ilya Bryzgalov’s first shutout since a 3-0 blanking of the Devils on March 13, 2012. Islanders coach Jack Capuano left Bryzgalov’s countryman Evgeni Nabokov in net to suffer through all 7 goals at the other end of the ice.

Bryzgalov got help from the penalty kill, which staved off a 2-minute, 5-on-3 disadvantage while leading just 1-0 in the first period. The Flyers’ penalty kill has reeled off 20 straight kills and they’re now 37-for-39 (94.8 percent) over the last 10 games.

With his first goal of the season, Zac Rinaldo joined the party on the scoresheet in the third period to pile on.

Claude "the weight of the C" Giroux has a game like this once a year, a true leader and captain does this on a weekly basis

When Hartnell gets back in the lineup Giroux will do it more than that.

You're blasting Giroux 15 games into his captaincy? He's averaging nearly a point per game even though he has a new winger nearly every game. He's been awesome on faceoffs, he's turning Matt Read into a star and he followed up his words with his best game of the season. He can't make an immobile defense corp more mobile or help Bryz during shootouts or keep Hartnell from getting hurt or the keep the Flyers from resigning Jagr. What more do you want?

We are committed to BRYZ???.....Hopefully thats just talk because it doesnt matter what we do we cant win with a goalie who cant stop the puck...doesnt want to be here ..and is a head case. This guy just can't handle playing here and is not a technically sound goalie

It's great that they won but lets not go gangbusters here, the Islanders were terrible. Let's see what happens against Pittsburgh, something tells me they won't lay down like the Isles did.

    — neddyflanders: Actually the Pens have been lying down for the Flyers for years on their home ice. Philly has only lost there once since Consul Energy Center was opened two years ago.

-flyersfan4life/mr negative....you do realize that Bryz GAA is 16th best in the league and his save % is 19th best...not exactly at the top of the league...they win 1 game and once again you want to have a parade...this team isnt going anywhere this year ..offense..defense and goaltending all average at best ..but keep the faith Big Ed loves guys like you...one win against a lousy team and the season is turned around....

1000% right on....our only hope is an amnesty clause or Bryz retires and goes back to Russia...we are doomed as long as he is in net

I stand by my words you cannot win anything with a goalie who can't stop the puck....

P.S. That "lousy" team just won consecutive games over the Rangers and Devils, beating New Jersey 5-1 on Saturday.

Flyers1000: You want to play the statistics game? Okay.

Bryz leads the league on TOI at 866:38 and games played (15). He's 4th in total saves (359). His GAA is 2.42 but he's ahead of Martin Brodeur, and only a whisker away from Henrik Lundqvist (2.35) and Marc-Andre Fleury (2.34).

Given the utter lack of support he's gotten from his teammates I'd say that's pretty good.

Ask your physician to switch you from Prozac to Zoloft. The Prozac may have worked for Tony but it's not working for you.

Admittedly the Isles looked fatigued most of the game.
That said, solid 60 minute effort by the Boys.
Won most of the puck battles.
Great job on the PK, particularly the 5-on-3.
A stride in the right direction....

Why the heck mention that a guy didn't get a hat trick. You praise a guy for a 3 point game and then go "but he didn't get a hat trick." Weird writing. Just had to say something negative didn't you?

100% agree. How clueless is Seravalli that he doesn't know such a comment only makes himself look petty and foolish?

    Nearly everybody reads The Bulletin.
