Giroux injured in Germany
Friday was a strange day for the Flyers' two stars skating in Germany: neither Claude Giroux nor Danny Briere registered a point in their 4-3 overtime loss with Eisbaren Berlin, a definite rarity for two players who have taken the German Elite League by storm.
More importantly, Giroux suffered a neck injury as a result from a check to the head, which required him to leave the game and be sent to the hospital by team doctors for evaluation.
In messages exchanged late on Saturday night in Berlin time, Giroux told the Daily News that it was "just a little neck injury" and to "not read too much into it."
He said he was feeling fine. As far as a timetable, Giroux said he couldn't guess, but published reports in Germany suggested he could return to practice as soon as Tuesday.
Giroux, 24, has 19 points in 9 games for Berlin.
LOCKOUT UPDATE: The NHL and NHLPA are tentatively scheduled to resume negotiations on Monday night in New York to end an 8-day hiatus in talks. On Thursday, the NHL had suggested a two-week moratorium in talks.

Can someone please tell me why an elite NHL player like Giroux is playing in Germany? Is it money, conditioning, principal ??? This sport has been the one saving grace for me. Hockey players are willing to work and for the most part not come off as obnoxious with demands. But the greed has trickled down into hockey as well. I'm just so sick of the whole sports scene any more.— djlen - Djlen- Agreed. The players gave up A Lot the last go-around. I think this should have been a status-quo contract, but owners are going for the throat. Maybe they should realize that the semi-fans were just getting back into the game (at least in PHL), now they are setting that back and possibly killing the rally. I was a modestly more than casual fan and the last game I attended was Double-OT against Tampa (Best Game in Sports --EVER). Give me a reason to get involved.

- it's obvious to me that hockey players play for the love of the game, most of the stars are playing right now and making significantly less than they would in the NHL which speaks volumes. that's why i'll hold out hope for this thing to get resolved and play a shortened season, but if another whole season is lost i'm gone!— LongballLeb

- And have Bettman take that chump Donald Fehr with him! 50% of the revenue isn't enough for the players' union? They get their money so the owners should get theirs too. That's why they own the teams! Try going into YOUR boss sometime and tell him you want over half of what he makes and see how long you still have a job!— vietnamvet
- That argument doesn't work if it's harder to find people who can play NHL-caliber hockey than it is to find business who can run teams. And sorry to break it to you, but players are rarer birds. They're the product here. It's not quite the same as assembly line workers who make cars, where the workers are interchangeable and the cars are what people want.
The players and their game are what people want. You're damn straight they should leverage that.
Besides, if you can't ask for over half of what your boss makes, that pretty much means you have an unskilled job that can be done by any of a million people. The players are not in that boat. There's a lot more businessmen in this world that could run a hockey team than there are Claude Girouxs to play on it.
Besides, we're the ones who are shoveling billions of dollars at the NHL. We've already decided it's worth that much to us. To start whining that the players are overpaid after we've spent four decades in this town lionizing them is pretty foolish.— janiscortese - Many pro players contracts have stipulations in it of what players can and can't do. Can't ride a motorcycle. Can't go running with the bulls. Can't go bowling on a Saturday Night (Special Bynum Clause). For the life of me I have no idea how NHL players can be allowed to go overseas and participate in................a contact sport! Please spare me the "For the love of the game" and "Well, they have insurance" excuses. This league went through a serious lockout not long ago, no? I'm sick of looking at Fehr, sick of Bettman. Sick of all the hard line union players making millions. Bust that union, once and for all and drop your season ticket plans.
