Fourth and goal

In the grand scheme of the game, it was a meaningless play, the Panthers going for it on fourth and goal from the 1. But the Eagles D didn’t want to give up a late-game touchdown. They stuffed DeAngelo Williams for a one-yard loss. Eagles win 38-10.

This was a great way for the Eagles defense to start the season. They forced seven turnovers, and held the Panthers to 169 yards and just 2.4 yards per play. And, thanks to that late goal-line stand, they held the Panthers to just 10 points.

Jim Johnson always felt that if his defense limited the opposition to 17 points, that would be good enough for the Eagles to win. Today, the Birds showed that even without Johnson, Stewart Bradley and Brian Dawkins, they could keep their opponent under that 17-point total. Their performance is sure to add confidence to guys like rookie Macho Harris and middle linebacker Omar Gaither.
