Yuengling gets hoppy with upcoming India Pale Lager release

Local hopheads rejoice: D.G. Yuengling & Son will soon join your bitter ranks with the November release of a recently announced IPL — or India Pale Lager.

Local hopheads rejoice: D.G. Yuengling & Son will soon join your bitter ranks with the November release of a recently announced IPL — or India Pale Lager.

Yuengling began teasing photos of the brew last week via social media, taunting fans with hoppy promises to come. Now, though, thanks to a 6-second video, the official announcement has arrived.

"Yuengling IPL is a well-balanced lager with an unexpected mix of hops," marketing manager Jen Holtzman said of the new beer. "This is not just a hopped up lager, but a truly unique brew."

So unique, in fact, that the style itself has only caught on in the craft beer world within the last couple of years. Now, Yuengling will join other IPL-offering breweries like Sam Adams, Widmer Brothers Brewing, and, more locally, Straub.

India Pale Ales, or IPAs, of course, have long been an obsession in craft beer, and Holtzman admits that Yuengling's IPL comes around as a result of "the popularity of the IPA style." And with Yuengling having long mastered the lager style with their flagship Traditional Lager brew, the move seems like a natural progression.

Yuengling's IPL will serve as a winter seasonal offering from the brewery, complementing other seasonals like Yuengling Summer Wheat and Oktoberfest. So don't expect this one year-round, as with, say, Sam Adams' Douple Agent IPL.

Do, however, keep your eyes open for bottles and cases beginning November 2015, when Yuengling IPA is scheduled to hit store shelves.
