Weckerly’s Ice Cream to release Barnes-inspired ice cream sandwich

For most people, the beautiful art represented in the Barnes museum inspires a range of emotions. And for others, it apparently inspires a sweet tooth.

For most people, the beautiful art represented in the Barnes museum inspires a range of emotions. And for others, it apparently inspires a sweet tooth.

Weckerly's Ice Cream is part of the latter group, which they'll prove later this month with the release of the "Barnes Ensemble" — a Barnes-inspired ice cream sandwich that blends the French-style custard artisans' expertise with a tribute to one of the most impressive art collections in the world.

Priced at $5, the treat itself features two kinds of lemon verbena geranium ice cream: One mixed with local berries, and the other with peach butter. Both are sandwiched between two granola-geranium shortbread cookies to form the Barnes Ensemble. It will be available exclusively at a Weckerly's pop-up on the Barnes campus, which runs Aug. 24 through Sept. 5 from noon to 6 p.m.

The Barnes' eclectic nature is the chief inspiration for Weckerly's here, with owners Jen and Andy Satinsky drawing on the museum's seemingly endless collection paintings, furniture, and textiles for direction. In addition to the sandwich, Weckerly's will also provide ice cream flavors like nectarine-rosemary sorbet, caramel corn, and peaches and cream at their pop-up.

Incidentally, the pop-up era for Weckerly's may soon come to an end, with the ice cream shop earlier this year announcing that they'll be opening a brick-and-mortar location in Fishtown in the fall.
