Point Breeze pop-up beer garden is shut down by city

Neighbors had complained.

The city Department of Licenses & Inspections has shut down the pop-up beer garden at 1622 Point Breeze Ave. in the Point Breeze section. It's in a once-empty lot just off the corner of 22d and Tasker Streets.

Operator John Longacre (South Philly Tap Room/American Sardine Bar), who opened the bar in mid-May, told the website Billy Penn that he was served a cease-and-desist order Tuesday, July 8. He tentatively has a hearing Thursday.

It's not clear what kind of jurisdiction L&I has in this case. Longacre told Billy Penn that he had applied for a temporary zoning permit last week but that the agency lost the paperwork.

Neighbors in the gentrifying area had objected to the beer garden. (See this backgrounder.)

A 2012 change to the Pennsylvania code allows liquor-license holders to obtain permission to serve alcohol at up to 50 off-site events a year.
