- Agreed - Far too many restuarants in this city where a 28 year old "chef of the moment" opens a restaurant with no table covers, used, unmatched cheap dishes, silverware, small tables and uncomfortable chairs - paints the walls battleship gray, and proceeds to cook herb-encrusted chicken and plops it atop a mound of garlic potatoes that he / she makes by the bucket full and charge $24 for it. Add a half-dozen unskilled bohemian art-student waitstaff and they think they have a restaurant. Little Pete's does a much better job at comfort food than half these places, at half the prices, with far better service.
The dining public needs to demand more for their money and stop paying people to play chef. You could buy a roasted chicken for $7 that's good or better than 3/4th's of these "restaurants".— PhillyDaniel - Sorry Ms. Lou, but NOT all animals are created equal. - I agree with the Moose. There's never anything about really good, affordable (i.e. entrees about $20) restaurants in the area-there's a LOT more to the Greater Philadelphia area than this food section ever seems to be bothered trying to find. How about some coverage of that?— Stripes_55
- First of all, slide shows are slow and annoying so I didn't bother to click beyond the #1 (Barclay Prime). Secondly, the whole list is suspect if B-Prime is listed as "hot". B-Prime has not been "hot" for about 4 years now. You can walk in there any night without a reservation and get a table, (as long as it's not Penn Graduation weekend).— #1 With A Bullet
- Nectar is hit and miss. Had a great meal there first visit, and had one of the WORST meals of my life there on a second visit. The lobster they served on visit two was rubber, unchewable. So at their prices I'm afraid to go back. Will it be great or garbage?— warrentheape

Three of these picks aren't even in Philly. Change the title of the piece to "20 of the hottest restaurants in the Philly area."— daxtremesolja- @Stripes - there are so many places you never hear about (especially in this publication) that fit the bill of great food in the $20/entree range. Many of them are labeled gastropubs, which could be why. Sidecar, Devil's Den, Kraftwork, South Philly Taproom and Kite and Key are just a couple of the many places who employ up-and-coming chefs who are out to prove their chops (ncluding lamb and pork). Give them a try and you won't be disappointed. Most have great tap lists, too.
Also, Berwyn and Collingswood are not Philadelphia, thank you.— stefek23 - You don't know what you're talking about. Every one of those restaurants you listed has been covered in this publication multiple times. — Tatt2

Not in most people's budgets to blow a month's worth of grocery money on one sit-down meal. If it is, then you are one of the lucky few. LOL— Tyrone Biggums Jr.- The doughnuts at Federal are really just OK - plain, old fashioned deep fried doughnuts topped with "exotic" syrupy stuff. On the other hand, the fried chicken is to die for - lightly coated and fried, crisp and simply delicious. Don't bother with the powdered finishes - get it "naked".
If you want really good doughnuts, try the Donut Plant in NYC. - thanks for the tip. i'll jump in my car and drive 2 hours up to nyc to get one.

- I recently went to Cochon, a pork-themed, French inspired BYO in Queen Village, and was pleasantly surprised with what I found. Be warned, it's cash only. Definitely worth a trip for those who aren't afraid of a little pork in their life.— Jesus_the_Gardener
