How do Philadelphians celebrate National Beer Day?

Another day, another unofficial holiday. This time, it's a celebration for the nation's hop heads, courtesy of National Beer Day.

First celebrated in 2009, National Beer Day marks the first day in 1933 when Americans could legally brew, buy, and sell beer measuring up to 3.2 percent in alcohol content following the establishment of Prohibition. That change was allowed by the Cullen-Harrison act, which altered the definition of "intoxicating liquors" from beverages with more than .5 percent alcohol to those with more than 3.2 percent alcohol.

Prohibition itself was completely repealed on December 5, 1933 — eight months after the Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect. Upon signing the act in March 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt would utter his famous "I think this would be a good time for a beer" line.

Now, 83 years later, Philadelphians seem to agree. And with some help from a report from beer-oriented social media service Untappd, we can see exactly how our city celebrates that fateful 1933 day.

The service rounded up check-in data from last year's National Beer Day to determine Untappd-using Philadelphians' preferences for where, what, and when they choose to celebrate National Beer Day. The results: We love all kinds of beer all over, but mostly in mid-evening.

Last year's National Beer Day saw the most check-ins from Philadelphians at the 7 p.m. hour, right at the conclusion of many standard happy hours.

According to that same check-in data, most folks throughout the National Beer Day 2015 enjoyed Stone Brewing's limited Enjoy By 4.20.15 IPA, which was the most popular brew last year. Second, of course, was our old standby, Yuengling Traditional Lager, followed by Weyerbacher's Sunday Morning Stout and Not Your Father's Root Beer. The overall top 10:

1. Stone Enjoy By 04.20.15 IPA by Stone Brewing
2. Traditional Lager by Yuengling Brewery
3. Sunday Morning Stout by Weyerbacher Brewing Company
4. Not Your Father's Root Beer (5.9%) by Small Town Brewery
5. 60 Minute IPA by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
6. Kirsch Gose by Victory Brewing Company
7. Miller Lite by Miller Brewing Company
8. DirtWolf by Victory Brewing Company
9. Hop Hunter IPA by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
10. Aprihop by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

As far as the city's top venues for having a brew, Wells Fargo Center took first place in last year's data — though, that's likely due to the Flyers-Rangers game on April 7 last year. Close behind Wells Fargo was Monk's Cafe, followed by two Fox and Hound locations. The top 10 area venues in Untappd on National Beer Day are as follows:

1. Wells Fargo Center at 3601 S Broad St, Philadelphia
2. Monk's Cafe at 264 S 16th St, Philadelphia
3. Fox and Hound at 1501 Spruce St, Philadelphia
4. Fox and Hound at 160 N Gulph Rd, King of Prussia
5. Tired Hands Brewing Company at 16 Ardmore Ave, Ardmore
6. Perch Pub at 1345 Locust St, Philadelphia
7. Jon's Bar & Grille at 300 South St., Philadelphia
8. Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant at 124 E Kings Hwy, Maple Shade
9. Hulmeville Inn at 4 Trenton Rd, Langhorne
10. Pinocchio's Beer Garden at 131 E Baltimore Ave, Media

So wherever and whatever you drink this National Beer Day, remember a bygone, beer-less era, and savor your sips. But please do so moderately: Today is also National Alcohol Screening Day and World Health Day, after all.
