Growlers closes, returning as Mexican bar
The Bella Vista bar has closed for a revamp after three years and will reopen as La Casa de tu Madre.
Growlers at Eighth and Fitzwater Streets in Bella Vista has closed for a revamp after three years and will reopen as La Casa de tu Madre.
It will be the first Mexican restaurant for Jason Evenchik - who also owns or co-owns Midtown Village's Vintage, Time and Bar, Northern Liberties' Heritage and East Passyunk's Garage - and also his first establishment with a name longer than one word.
"I figure people will call it 'La Casa,'" he said. "Plus I've always wanted a bar called 'Your mom's house.'"
He'll keep chef Michael Thomas, an alum of Kraftwork and Bar Ferdinand who has been running the Growlers kitchen since spring 2014. "His mom is Ecuadorian and he has quite the grasp on Mexican and Latino food in general," said Evenchik, describing the forthcoming menu as "fun, simple, great food." Specifically, he promised tacos, enchiladas, burritos, nachos and aguachiles — a spicy Mexican ceviche.
Decor will be festive and colorful, a change from the dark maroon, black-leather scheme that now covers the bar and fireplace-equipped dining room. The extensive beer selection will stay, but be joined by a menu of margaritas, micheladas and tequilas. General manager Corey Elmi (brother of Laurel's Nick Elmi) will continue his front-of-house duties.
Sunday, Sept. 20, was Growlers last day of operation. Evenchik is hoping to reopen in two weeks, but acknowledges that Pope Francis' visit could throw a wrench into his timeline.
