Giving Hop Sing Laundromat a shot

The enigmatic Chinatown bar, known for its mixed drinks, is offering shots of top-shelf liquor at almost unheard-of prices.

By "short-range missiles," he means shots.

Not Fireballs, friends. Top-shelf liquor, and at outstanding prices.

HSL, mind you, is not a "shots" place. You walk in, your ID is checked, you're inspected (no sneakers, no shorts), and you're seated in the anteroom until you are ushered to a roomy table in a dim, ornate room, where you sip cocktails in comfort without the annoyance of the flash of a cell-phone camera.

All very civilized.

In addition, there will be a daily cocktail offered at $6.66; tonight's is the Ward 8 (Wild Turkey 101 rye, squeezed-to-order orange juice, fresh lemon juice).

The program is on from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday; 1029 Race St. no phone or sign.
