Federal Donuts pays tribute to World Café’s David Dye with ‘Swirled Cafe’ donut

After 25 years helming WXPN’s World Cafe radio show, host David Dye, 66, is retiring at the end of the month, and Federal Donuts is honoring his quarter-century of musical service with a sweet treat.

The donut/chicken shop this week will debut its limited-edition “Swirled Café” donut, which will be available starting on Friday, and running through the weekend. As the restaurant said in a release, the Dye tribute donut will be topped with a tie-dyed, coffee-flavored drizzle and a tres leches glaze.

Proceeds from sales of that particular donut, the restaurant says, will go toward supporting WXPN and World Café.

The longtime WXPN host announced his retirement from the station in Nov. 2016, writing that by April this year, he would step away from a gig he began way back in Oct. 1991. Dye, however, will remain at the station as host of “Funky Friday,” which airs Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

As Dan DeLuca reported last month, Dye will step down as full-time host of the program on March 31 to make way for Talia Schlanger, 31, who takes over World Café on April 3. Schlanger, a native of Toronto, arrived at WXPN in Oct. 2016 as a part-time host of the show.

World Café launched in 1991, and initially was broadcast on just five stations. It is now syndicated across more than 200 public radio stations throughout the US.

“It's impossible to measure the impact that David has had on artists and audiences with World Cafe,” WXPN general manager Roger LaMay said last year of Dye in a statement. “The show's tremendous success and high acclaim is due mainly to his efforts and the generous support of members and listeners.”
