Eli Kulp Day: Food community gets together to help

It's sold out, but take a gander at the silent-auction items.

The restaurant community shuddered in May when it was learned that chef Eli Kulp of High Street Hospitality Group (Fork, High Street on Market, a.kitchen) was seriously injured in the Amtrak derailment.

He's in a rehab center. No new info has been released about his condition in some time.

But meanwhile, his friends are getting together for a fund-raiser to cover the expenses not covered by insurance.

A year ago, Mayor Nutter had named July 16, 2014, "Eli Kulp Day" to honor Kulp for his selection as a best new chef in America from Food & Wine magazine.

His business partner Ellen Yin decided to host the benefit at Fork in Old City on July 16, 2015. It's now sold out.

More than $110,000 has been raised from companies and through individuals including Caviar, Colonial Penn Life Insurance Company, Bread and Butter Productions, Ecolab, EventQuip, Franklin Square Capital Partners, John Alchin + Hal Marryatt, Julius Silvert, Philadelphia Magazine, Reserve, Singer Equipment, Sparks Entertainment, and Termac.

Participants will include: a.kitchen + bar; Amis; Birchrun Hills Farm; Blackfish; Cuba Libre; Di Bruno Bros.; Éclat Chocolate; Farm and Fisherman; Fork; Franklin Fountain; High Street on Market; Hungry Pigeon; Lacroix; Laurel; Le Cheri; La Peg; Madame Fromage; Pub + Kitchen; Rival Brothers; Sbraga; Serpico; Vedge; Vernick Food & Drink; Volver; Will BYOB; Wyebrook Farm; Zahav; and Zeppoli.

Beverages will be provided by: The Artisan's Cellar; Yards Brewing; Moore Brothers Wine Company; Bluecoat Gin; Laird and Company; David Bowler Wine; Winebow; The Wine Merchant; Victory Brewing; and Penn Distributors.

Silent auction items will include:

  1. Tickets to 2016 Aspen Food & Wine Classic including two all-access passes for three fabulous days filled with wine tastings, food samplings and cooking demonstrations. Also includes two nights of accommodations at the The Gant Hotel, June 17 to 19, 2016.

  2. Tickets to the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, including condo accommodations and two all-access passes from Feb. 25-28, 2016.

  3. A Private Wine & Cheese Class, to be held on a Sunday at a.bar, with author and fromager Max McCalman and sommelier Mariel Wega, including cheeses donated by Di Bruno Bros. and autographed books from McCalman.

  4. Four seasons of Starr Dinners: four dinners for four people with wine or cocktails at Starr Restaurants' including Talula's Garden and Serpico in Philadelphia and Upland and The Clock Tower in New York City.

  5. Behind the Scenes at Bon Appetit, including a tour of the magazine's office at 1 World Trade Center, a tasting in their Test Kitchen, and dinner with Restaurant Editor Andrew Knowlton at his favorite under-the-radar NYC food and cocktail spot.

  6. Dine Around in Rittenhouse Square (stay at The Rittenhouse Hotel; dine at a.bar, Vernick, Melograno and Le Cheri; enjoy brunch at the hotel the next day) or Old City (stay at the Hotel Monaco; dine at Red Owl Tavern, Zahav, Fork, High Street on Market and Le Peg; see a late-night Fringe Arts festival show and coffee at Menagerie).

  10. A Pasta Making Class with the team from Brigantessa and Le Virtù, featuring hands-on pasta-making for six people with Chef Joe Cicala, plus a pasta lunch and wine

  11. Be the First to Dine at High Street on Hudson, including friends & family dinner at High Street Hospitality Group's forthcoming New York City restaurant, plus a tour of the restaurant, baked items and HSNYC swag, transportation to and from New York and overnight accommodations.

  12. An Intimate Wine Dinner at Fork, including dinner for 10 in its private dining room, attended by the Fork team, including owner Ellen Yin, plus a guided wine tasting and behind-the-scenes stories from the restaurant's nearly 20-year history.

  13. Seasons tickets for two at the Arden, including tickets to all five shows in the 2015-2016 season, and pre-theater dinners at Kanella, Fond, Capofitto and Hawthorne's Café.
