Brooklyn Brewery announces 2016 #PhillyMash lineup

The Brooklyn Mash series comes but once a year.

Philadelphia, prepare yourselves for a beer-induced New York state of mind beginning Thursday, Aug. 25, when Brooklyn Brewery settles into town for a weekend of brew-centric dinners, parties, and events concluding on Sunday, Aug. 28.

After all, the Brooklyn Mash series comes but once a year. Tickets, which run $20 to $45 depending on the event, are on sale now.

This year, the Philly Mash's fourth running, begins Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. with a collaborative dinner between Brooklyn Brewery Chef Andrew Gerson and the crew at Bing Bing Dim Sum (1648 E. Passyunk Ave.). Chefs Gerson and Ben Puchowitz will prepare a one-off, family-style menu to be paired with rare Brooklyn beers at your discretion.

"That's going to allow us to put a bunch of big bottles down on the table and let people adventure and experience on their own," says Chef Gerson, "rather than being told, 'This is the best pairing for this.' "

Tickets for the dinner are $45 per person, and are available here.

On Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. things get a little more musical, courtesy of co-sponsor Timberland. The Mash hosts garage rockers Twin Peaks at Union Transfer (1026 Spring Garden St.), along with Philly-based openers Palmas and TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb. Expect drink specials and Brooklyn beers to help keep the dancing at a maximum.

The concert is free to attend, but an RSVP is required, and can be made online.

Aug. 27 brings the Brooklyn Mash's crown jewel: the Beer Mansion at Mount Pleasant mansion (3800 Mt. Pleasant Dr.). Starting at 5 p.m., Brooklyn Brewery will take over the Fairmount Park estate for its first event of this kind, which is something like a beer festival, but way more interesting.

The mansion itself will be organized into four areas: The Barrel Aging Room, the IPA Room, the Ale Room, and the Beer Garden. Each will focus on a different beer style, as well as pairings and other sensory input to go along with them. Gerson, for his part, will be building a dish in attendees hands (literally) in the Ale Room.

"It's more than just the flavor of a dish and how it pairs with a beer. We're trying to get people out of their comfort zones," says Gerson.

Expect brews from St. Benjamin Brewery, Sly Fox, Evil GeniusYards, and Forest & Main, as well as bites from 1732 Meats and DiBruno Bros. Tickets, on sale now, run $20.

On Brooklyn's final day in town — Aug. 28 — they're taking it to the streets of Fishtown and Northern Liberties (starting at 1001 N. 2nd St. #21) with their "Neighborhood Immersion" event. This year marks the brewery's first time bringing this event to Philly, describing it as a "roving neighborhood party."

Timberland joins Brooklyn at the Trailhead, a pop-up shop and bar from the two companies that features special edition gear and beer, specifically in the form of Brooklyn's specially released Ghost Bottles — or, beers that aren't typically seen outside the brewery. The Trailhead also will be the place to stop for coupon booklets that offer discounts to move you through the neighborhood.

"The idea is to bring people who may or may not know a neighborhood to immerse themselves in that neighborhood," says Gerson. "It's really a way of showcasing independently owned businesses."

To that end, look out for deals and specials from restaurants and bars like Bottle Bar East, Paesano's, Stock, and Barcade. Shops like Exit Skate Shop, Creep Records, and Green Aisle Grocery will also feature special offers for the day. At $25, tickets are on sale now.

Brooklyn Brewery will announce tap takeovers and additional events as the Brooklyn Mash date approaches. More information is available here.
