So there’s a group at Harvard that wants to posthumously award diplomas to students who were expelled in the 1920s on suspicion of being gay.

Really?  First, we have hate crime legislation that values minority victims over the average white guy who gets mugged.

Now, we have séance matriculations?  What’s it all about, Ivy?

It really is amazing the length to which some people (spelled “w-o-m-e-n”) will go to when they want to make a point.

We saw that a few weeks ago when Planned Parenthood threw its hissyfit about (temporarily) losing funding from the Susan J. Komen foundation and blamed it on right-wing politics.

We saw it a short time later when reproductive-rights advocates (that should cover the pro-abortion, pro-contraception, anti-celibacy triumvirate) attacked the Catholic Church for asserting its First Amendment rights in refusing to subsidize birth control for its employees.

One man’s radical is another’s pragmatist.

For the past few weeks, the opposition has been gearing up to paint Rick Santorum as a monk from the Dark Ages.  His positions on women’s reproductive rights, their ability to manage a career and family and the nature of same-sex relationships have gotten him into hot water with conservatives, who are shaking in their boots about a Santorum candidacy.  They’re afraid he’s too radical to defeat President Obama, and want their fellow Republicans to take the safe road toward ‘electability.’

As far as the liberals, they’re doing Lee Atwater proud. The former campaign manager for George H. W. Bush used lies and innuendo to connect poor helmeted Michael Dukakis to Willie Horton, a notorious murderer.  So much for President Dukakis.

Nell McCormack Abom

Nell McCormack Abom is an exceptional journalist.  An Emmy winner, a member of former Governor Ridge’s press corps and a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Ithaca College, she has worked at numerous media outlets across the nation, including her native Philadelphia.

Aside from her family, I’d wager she’s proudest of one of her earliest accomplishments:  serving as Class President for Merion Mercy Academy’s Class of 1979 (thanks, Nell, great job by the way.)

Francesco Renga, Paisano

I know everyone thinks I live for three things:

(1) Defending the Catholic Church

(2) Being mean to gay people

I'm sure even Sarah Bernhardt had to deal with cancellations...

There’s been a lot of misinformation about what happened at my alma mater, Villanova, this week.  It seems that a gay performance artist was contracted to appear at the university to put on a workshop about ‘life’ or his particular view of it.  Which, of course,  is what drama is all about.

But even the Augustinians, who are known for their appreciation of scholarship and their respect for the marketplace of ideas, have a limit.  This fellow, Tim Miller, has a habit of doing risqué things on stage, like simulating sex (which is also dangerous if the floorboards on your stage are a bit old…)

He says it’s part of the show, but that he wouldn’t have done the “Wildcat Thing” during his performance at the school.

To those who are convinced that only women care about the right to privacy, that only atheists respect religious freedom and that only Democrats fought for civil rights, here’s an illuminating commentary from Rep. Allan West.  It’s particularly fitting, during Black History Month.
