When she was Catholic

The transformation is complete.  Caroline Kennedy has gone from being a bittersweet symbol of an innocent and happy time in our nation's history to a shill for a party her father would never have recognized.

At the Democratic National Convention last week, JFK's daughter, the one who posed so fetchingly on Macaroni and frolicked around her father's desk in the Oval Office obliterated the last vestiges of a magical Camelot with her attack on the church that gave sustenance to generations of Kennedys,  most notably her beloved grandmother and Aunt Eunice.

Caroline made the following statement at the podium:

As a Catholic woman, I take reproductive health seriously, and today, it is under attack. This year alone, more than a dozen states have passed more than 40 restrictions on women's access to reproductive health care. That's not the kind of future I want for my daughters or your daughters. Now isn't the time to roll back the rights we were winning when my father was president. Now is the time to move this country forward.

It's interesting how the phrase 'reproductive health care' has come to replace the phrase 'reproductive rights' which everyone knows means 'abortion and the other stuff.'  And it's not surprising that a Democratic woman would sound the alarm about a threat to that 'care.'  But what is particularly upsetting about Caroline's little show is that she used her Catholic faith to try and legitimize her take on an issue that she knows is diametrically opposed to the church's position.

Caroline Kennedy can say whatever she wants about 'reproductive health care' on her own time.  So can all of the other pro-choice 'Catholic' women out there.  But when they start wrapping themselves in the Virgin Mary's veil, they've crossed the line.

The Kennedys have no allegiance to morality. Grandpa Joe was a boot legger and a gangster. Uncle Ted left a woman to die then drove his wife to drink. And the theme prevails among other members of the clan. JFK was an aberration.

Caroline matured into a ditz. You need only listen to her. Enough, enough, enough of the Kennedys for now and forever.

Chris, I also cringed when I heard the words "As a Catholic woman..." And I agree that the word "health" has become the code for not only contraception but also abortion "rights".

It does concern me when states make birth control a political issue in deciding how health insurance is regulated.

As I have said on earlier posts, there are many reasons other than birth control for some women taking the pill. Or even if birth control is the issue, there are women for whom pregnancy itself is a health threat.

While the church insists on natural family planning only, those methods do not work always and obviously. If an employer can obtain insurance coverage for contraception that does not cost him anything, then I do not see that as a moral dilemma.

Abortion as birth control is always abominable.

I am also disturbed by the insinuation that single women who ask for contraception or are prescribed such pills to regulate their menses, are labeled as libertine.

Caroline wants to remember only the good deeds of her dad and uncles. The Kennedys have many skeletons in their closets.

    Camelot was a fantasy.

Christine, tell us again how you, as a catholic woman, feel about the death penalty.

Christine, are the priets who stand up in Catholic institutions all over the world each and every Sudnay and condemn Homosexuality, child abuse, child molestation, masturbation, etc. putting on a "little show" when their own institution has spent decades at best passively ignoring, and at worst hiding and enabling those very actions within their own ranks?

Anyone who claims to be against abortion and also against making access to birth control easier to obtain for women is just plain out of their minds. To reduce unwanted pregnancies, woman need access to contraceptives and birth control.

And this is the challenge for the GOP in the coming years. They need to stop with the incessant whining and actually start doing something!

shamdog - You obviously never go to church. In the Mass, the homily must always pertain to the Gospel. Priests do not go around condemning anyone but rather urge those who need it to ask forgiveness and to be reconciled to God.

Yes, there are calls from the pulpit for healing our church. As well there should be calls for justice for the falsely accused. How can anyone be taken seriously who suddenly "remembers" a molestation that happened 4 decades ago? And just happens to have a lawsuit in his back pocket.

True victims need to be supported of course, but false witnesses must also be found out. That is why we have judges and courts.

It lends credibility to Caroline's argument to note that she is a practicing Catholic. Truly moral people see all shades of gray, not just black and white; to be truly devout, good, and moral means not judging others and not telling other people what to do. That is the TRUE Catholic philosophy when it comes to reproductive freedom (or life in a family, the life of a woman and her God-given right to make her own decisions). Get with the program, Christine. Just because Caroline made YOU look shrill doesn't mean she is...talk about projection! Go see a therapist pronto.

Sophy - there is a huge difference between "judging others" and defending the actual teachings of the church, which are based on the natural law.

Since the church regards all life as sacred, it must object to any method that ends a pre-born life. That would include not only abortion but most forms of contraception and artificial insemination.

Posing as a practicing Catholic and making a comment on morals does not excuse Caroline from a false portrayal of her church's teachings. She should simply say, this is how I personally feel about it.

So no, she is not credible. She is merely expressing her opinion.

Why is being consistent and true to one's religious faith being "shrill"?

It really is quite sad that as we get closer and closer to the election, Ms. Flowers is becoming more and more angry and unhinged, attacking anyone and everyone she sees as her enemies. She can not saying anything positive about her candidate so she has instead employed a scorched earth policy of denigrating and belittling anyone who does not agree with her world view. It really is sad.

It's not a new trend, Ed. Flowers has always mocked and attacked those who don't hold the same positions that she does.

Dear Caroline, your mother ran to the other side of the planet to escape from the Kennedys. Take s hint from her. Keep your stupid mouth shut until you have something intelligent to say. It is time for the Kennedys, and you, too, to just disappear.
