Crying Rape

POSTED: Monday, February 27, 2012, 4:52 PM

It really is amazing the length to which some people (spelled “w-o-m-e-n”) will go to when they want to make a point.

We saw that a few weeks ago when Planned Parenthood threw its hissyfit about (temporarily) losing funding from the Susan J. Komen foundation and blamed it on right-wing politics.

We saw it a short time later when reproductive-rights advocates (that should cover the pro-abortion, pro-contraception, anti-celibacy triumvirate) attacked the Catholic Church for asserting its First Amendment rights in refusing to subsidize birth control for its employees.

And we saw it last week in Virginia, when the ladies and their commiserating gents rose up in anger at the prospect of a law which required pre-abortion ultrasounds.  Only they didn’t talk about “pre abortion ultrasounds.” They used a word that puts an end to every debate, every discussion, every good faith attempt to arrive at some legitimate common ground.

They cried “rape.”

Yes, the women who were so angry that the State of Virginia would force them to undergo a procedure which may or may not have been medically necessary but which violated their right to erect a no-trespass zone around the uterus made sure to redefine it as ‘rape’ because the proposed act would be conducted against the woman’s will.

I understand that reasonable minds disagree on whether a woman should be forced to undergo an ultrasound before obtaining an abortion.  I happen to think that a state is fully justified in forcing a mother to face the reality of what she is doing and acknowledge that the thing in her body is not simply a mass of indistinguishable, fungible cells but, rather, incipient humanity.  Yes, she probably already knows what it is.  But given the choice between annoying the woman, and the possibility that a life might be saved, I'd err on the side of life.

Clearly, not everyone agrees with me.

But what I don’t like is the hyperbole employed by reproductive-rights activists who think that shock tactics are fine as long as they come from their side of the fence.  God forbid Rick Santorum should give a dignified funeral to his son Gabriel, who died only two hours after being born to loving parents.  That’s sick and scary.

But calling legislators rapists because we disagree with them? That’s perfectly normal.

Apparently the Virginia bill is being revised continuously. The invasive procedure which was initially proposed has been withdrawn in place of an abdominal procedure.

At this point, voting on the bill has been delayed.

To be perfectly fair here. the purpose of all this "information" about the condition of the fetus and all other efforts to educate the woman about her baby is simply to discourage the abortion. That is obvious.

Those of us who are opposed to abortion except for medical emergencies could see this as a good thing. Those who want a woman to have absolute autonomy in this regard would of course object.

Only the fetus has no vote in the matter.

Magistra, I am shocked at your statements. How could a woman not possibly want to see an image of the life form within her body, unless she is so distraught over what she is about to commit to. If she sees the image and changes her mind, then what harm has been done. Of course I am describing a woman of conscience. And if she sees the image, has the abortion and is then racked with guilt, what does that say for her.

No, you are wrong. I am truly disappointed that you cannot see it for what it is. Not an invasion of body or privacy, but an image of truth. You can handle the truth can't you? Apparently not everyone can.

Look up the definition of rape, Ms. No Facts. Seriously, your ignorance scares me. Call a spade a spade. An invasive, painful, humiliating and utterly unnecessary torturing of women is rape...and to think that most of these CRAAAZY anti-abortion stunts (making the mother see the printout, heard the heartbeat, listen to a description of the size of the fetus) have been pushed forward by wacky women just sickens me. I think a woman getting an abortion knows exactly what she is doing and why she needs to do it. Don't torture her about it. YOU ARE NOT HER and you do not own her body. Are you going to raise this child? No, I doubt it. So shut up.

So you admit that it would be against the woman's will, and in order to have satisfied the law as it was originally written, a woman would have to undergo an invasive procedure. And yet you complain about women using the term "rape"?

And really, you don't like the hyperbole? That is absolutely comical. The right specializes in hyperbole. I'm amazed we haven't seen any comments from some of your supporters yet about marxism, socialism, or how liberals are trying to kill God. You even went so far a few weeks ago to compare the persecution of Christians in the Middle East the contraception requirement.

Here we have an example of READER HYSTERIA. From their rants it would be reasonable to conclude they have not read and understood the bill in question The ranting illustrates the concerns in full measure of the points made in this article.

The PURCHASE of an abortion requires more thought than the purchase of a pack of gum.

Whether or not you may favor or oppose abortion, and for whatever your reasons, there is absolutely no harm done to the woman, the fetus or anyone during an ultrasound, and except in rare cases there would be NO INVASIVE aspect during the ultrasound. And in such a case, the process is less invasive than the drawing of blood.

The ONLY CONCLUSION possible to all the INANE RESISTANCE is that the decision for an abortion bears with it a responsibility not to be taken lightly and which may reside with the mother for a long time, perhaps always. A responsibility such as that should not be undertaken without adequate time for understanding and reflection before it is too late to do otherwise.

Women are not mentally challenged, nor should they be treated like children who "don't understand" the gravity of what it means to get an abortion. As someone who has worked with women, I know the layers of counseling that go into making the appointment, pre-procedure and post-procedure. It is NOT taken lightly by anyone. But making it more humiliating, more difficult? That is not right.

To even SUGGEST that anyone prances into an abortion clinic and says, "Yeah, get me one of those..." is to lack even the barest hint of comprehension of what actually happens before and during a serious (if out patient) medical procedure.

Plumber, you are shockingly ignorant, not to mention sexist. Just like your buddy, Christine--a woman who is clearly suffering from gender fluidity, or a sincere wish to be a man who tells other women what to do!

Hamblin, what would you know to any meaningful extent, unless you are a woman about to confront an abortion. The view from your soap box is clouded by name calling.

You, Hamblin, have demonstrated once again your inability to read, understand and comment without venting.
