The Immaculate Reception

I’m now officially a Pittsburgh Steelers fan (at least until the end of this season.)

Understand how much  it pains me to say that.  My 70s Sundays were destroyed by the supremacy of our Western PA rivals when the Birds were so pathetic (ah, the times they ain’t a-changin…)

But I finally found an athlete who had the guts to come out and say what so many people are thinking but afraid to articulate in public because they’ll be called apologists for child rape, and all other sorts of over-the-top nonsense.

Here is an excerpt from an article that focuses on Tom Corbett’s take on Joe Paterno, but that includes an interesting commentary from Franco Harris, who played for Paterno at PSU:

Paterno drew some defense on Fox from former Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris, who served as an honorary member of Second Mile. Harris said the grand jury found that Paterno "cooperated fully with them."

"And then, all of a sudden, something came out about a moral obligation, and everybody jumped on that," Harris told Fox. "I think it is unfair how people were treating Joe with this issue because Joe is a highly moral person and great moral character."

Regardless of what you think about whether Paterno did enough from a ‘moral’ standpoint, Harris makes the very legitimate point that he is being held to impossibly high standards by those who have essentially made him the Emperor of Central Pennsylvania.  And who are turning the spin, into sin.

I’m glad Harris said what needed to be said.  Go Steelers.
