Susan Sarandon is a boob...two, actually
I used to like Susan Sarandon the “Ac-TRESS.” You know, the serious “THES-pian” who did an amazing job as Sister Helen Prejean in “Dead Man Walking,” an interesting piece of propaganda against capital punishment (I didn’t appreciate the message, but she was grand, nonetheless.) She was also amazing in Bull Durham (both of her,) and nabbed a boyfriend of almost two decades in the process. And of course, I loved Rocky Horror Picture Show, where virginal Janet (boy was that not typecasting) sings and swings with the best of them.
But as a person, Sarandon never struck me as particularly intelligent. She said all of the right things for Hollywood (which of course were as far to the left as you could get,) and didn’t sound like a fill-in from Jersey Shore (not all Italian women think the plural of ‘you’ takes an ‘s’) but her ability to treat opposing views with respect was woefully lacking. That, to me, is a sign of stupidity.
(And yes, it’s not just a liberal flaw.)
But Susie Q took the cake when she called Pope Benedict a Nazi the other day. While it is true that the Catholic Prelate was, for a brief time as a child, a member of the Hitler Youth, it is also true that he soon left the group putting both himself and his devout Catholic family at great risk.
Calling anyone a “Nazi” says more about the slanderer than the target of their ire, but in the case of Sarandon, it’s particularly telling. This is a woman who waxes poetic about human rights, women’s rights, tree rights (that’s environmentalism, for those who were wondering) and tolerance of all God’s children. But she finds it acceptable to defame a good man, one who has done considerably more to promote world peace than an over-the-hill-actress who has a rather inflated (ahem) sense of self.
If you ask me, Tim Robbins is lucky to be rid of her.
Comment removed.- I am feeling unacknowledged. May I also ad that I think Sarandon's "girls" are the real thing. She's had them since the 70s. She SHOULD date Bill Maher, who shares her values and view of the Pope. retour
- I'm all for the first amendment right to shoot your mouth off and say whatever stupid things might pop into one's mind, but can the sensible and decent people among us just agree to add that word to the collection of words that decent, intelligent people don't use? (along with calling somebody Hitler, the N-word, or the word that rhymes with maggot) Nothing positive ever comes of talking like that.
THE TRUTH- Following his 14th birthday in 1941, Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth[9]—as membership was required by law for all 14-year-old German boys after December 1939[10]—but was an unenthusiastic member who refused to attend meetings, according to his brother. Not that it matters to these folks. Maher???- sorry she's not Whoyie enough for that nut, he goes for beasts not breasts!!! sarah89- What is incredible is that these lefty loudmouths pay no price for such insults in Hollyweird. They go on and on about Islamophobia and not disrespecting Islam, but they have no qualms about insulting the head of the Catholic Church. One small satisfaction is realizing that Sarandon is an unhappy person, having been dumped by her not-husband. The lesson: being a committed leftist is the sure path to unhappiness. retour
retour, would you consider an amendment to your statement- being a committed leftist is the path that begins with unhappiness and goes nowhere.

First of all, thanks, Chris, for supplying the article which mentioned the fact that Sarandon also offended Jews by her slanderous name calling.
I understand that even Hindu leaders have joined in support of the Pope.
And can we please, just once, recognize that this really is just the opinion of a few misguided people like Sarandon or like Bill Maher, who is also violently anti-Catholic. He was forced to apologize for his remakr. She should also.
And retour, this is certainly NOT a group position by politically liberal thinkers and saying so is itself insulting.
And it would be nice for some Protestant Evangelical and Islamic leaders to join in condemning those who express this heinous slander against a good man.
I really like Phillycc74's suggestion. Magistra
Magistra, you are too sensitive. retour did not say what you said he said. Did you retour. PlumberJoe
philly, I am not sure I follow your reasoning. You are all for freedom of expression. Yet you want to enforce a quasi censorship of certain words. Who is to concoct this list of out of favor words. You? Magistra?
And then what, when someone violates the list? Call them unintelligent or bad. I appreciate you intent to improve the dialogue, but education and not censorship would seem to be more effective.
BTW, I thought Bull Durham to be worth seeing more than once. PlumberJoe- There are comment boards that allow a short period of time to correct typos. However, this board is not one of them. Oh wellll, guess that is just how it issss.

Unfortunately for you Magistra, you are going to have to face certain uncomfortable truths about the left. You have self identified as left leaning. You are in bed with a group that is generally deeply anti-religious. Do you not hear their repeated insults of Catholicism? Is it not obvious to you that the left's animosity toward Israel is thinly veiled anti-Semitism. In the case of the Occupiers, when they direct their hatred at "bankers and Wall Street and Neocons," these are nothing more then code words for Jews. The modern left was born in the French Revolution. What was the attitude of those French revolutionaries toward the Catholic Church? It was absolute murderous hatred. And that theme continues today. The Church is at odds with the State, and the left worships the State and wishes to destroy the Church. So, please do not respond with one of your preachy history lessons that no one pays any attention to. Sarandon and Maher are TYPICAL SPOKESPERSONS for the left. Accept it. That is who you have thrown in with. See for further example thoughtless critic and his hateful atheism. retour
retour, you have opened up an interesting dialogue.
Can there be two schools on the left, One, has sincere albeit misguided beliefs. The other school is bent on destroying this country.
I think that to be the case. At times a decent kid gets mixed up with a bad crowd. When they are fortunate, they realize what has happened to them and they get out before it is too late.
Bill Maher is from the evil school. Al Gore is from the evil school. O'Blame-O is the principal of the evil school.
I pay no attention to Sarandan, so I do not know which school she attends. PlumberJoe
Can there be two schools on the left, One, has sincere albeit misguided beliefs. (Yes, these are the Dupes like you know who on this board.) The other school is bent on destroying this country. (Yes, the FleaBaggers of Camp Alinsky including the Angry Quadrangle over on CFs article) But unfortunatly the Dupes and Fellow Travellers are equally damaging, what Savage calls the Marxist Lice on the Body Politic. I feel bad for Magistra, who is well intended but naive.
Another important issue is that I can disassociate (for e.g.) Barbara Steisand or Woody Allen from their politics. If you don't just put their political views out of your mind, you lose the ability to appreciate all their great artistic contributions.
Another big issue is CFs fabulous taste in eye candy/photographs. Each time I come back here to comment, I find myself pleasantly distracted by Sarandon's "girls."

Here is an outstanding and scholarly analysis of both the conservative and liberal movements in the Catholic Church, especially since the Second Vatican Council:
http://www.mmisi.org/ma/52_01/caiazza.pdf
It is a long paper, but if you take the time to read it, it illuminates the full spectrum of Catholic Thought.
I am from the generation that crossed the bridge with VII in the early 60's, having experienced the austerely conservative church of Pius XII and then the refreshing change of pace of John XXIII. (I also adored William F. Buckley and subscribed to his magazine National Review.)
I examined this article and decided that I am indeed a moderate progressive in the Catholic spectrum. I am pro-life but also pro-conscience. I am for free markets tempered with safety nets for those who fall through the cracks.
I can see a way for women to enter the priesthood (I know, I know, Christine). Especially since I personally experienced the full weight of church patriarchy as a young woman.
I could go on, but you get the picture.
There are some conservatives in other faiths who are willing to work with the church on issues of social justice. But there are also extremists who call the church a "cult".
Sarandon is an ultra-liberal who has no tolerance for the church's conservative views and took a cheap shot at the Pope. She is wrong and should apologize. Magistra
retour, you and I differ to a degree. But we both know who would destroy this country. This is an imperfect country, but to destroy it, in the name of improving it, is insanity.
I long ago stopped listening to Streisand, regardless of her singing. The same for watching Allen. They sicken me too much to be worth the effort. There are other talents around. The same for Maher.
As for the "girls," why are they on display except to be noticed? But I have refined my tastes and appreciate otherwise. PlumberJoe
