Martin Scorsese had this to say to reporters in India about his long-aborning Frank Sinatra biography: He'd like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro to play Ol' Blue Eyes and Dino. But would the veteran actors play the Rat Pack-era movie stars/saloon singers and Scorsese would cast younger performers to play Sinatra at earlier stages of his career, as Todd Haynes did in his unconventional Dylan biopic I'm Not There? The Playlist suggests that this might be the case. (Hat tip, Anne Thompson).
Who could play Young Blue Eyes? Zac Efron and James Marsden have the stage presence (and nice voices) Justin Timberlake has the stage presence and The Voice and Leonardo DiCaprio has the inside track with Scorsese, with whom he's made Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed and Shutter Island. Who would you cast?
And on the subject of Sinatra, who passed away twelve years ago, name the definitive Sinatra movies and songs.
Definitive Sinatra film (for me at least): THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. I actually think Efron might do young Sinatra well... garyk
DiCaprio's collaboration with Scorsese would serve them both well. And he could pass for a young Sinatra. I actually think that Pacino and De Niro would work better if Scorsese inverted their roles, with De Niro as Sinatra and Pacino as Dino (but Pacino's gotta stand on an apple box). Definitive Sinatra film is definitely OCEAN'S ELEVEN even if I like him in stuff like THE DETECTIVE and MANCHURIAN. Definitive song is difficult since he has so many iconic interpretations floating around. I love his Reprise version of "I've Got the World on a String," which is also quite a fitting tune for him. Carrie- Scorsese nothwithstanding, this has "compromised movie" written all over it. There's a good movie to be made about Sinatra but not while his kids are still around. Pash
I always have a hard time picturing any actor playing an iconic real life figure, and am always pleasantly surprised when someone manages to pull it off. I agree with Pash about the strong possibility of this being a compromised movie, though. My favorite Sinatra roles were in "Some Came Running" and "Manchurian Candidate." My favorite singing performances were "In the Wee Small Hours," "It Never Entered My Mind," and "Fly Me to the Moon." wwolfe
Apart from the ensemble "On the Town," I'd vote for "The Tender Trap and "Manchurian Candidate." I like his rendition of "Blue Skies" with the Dorsey band. carrierickey
For some reason, I have a very soft spot for the younger, bobby-soxer-idol Sinatra in the movies -- It Happened in Brooklyn, Anchors Aweigh, Step Lively, Higher and Higher, etc. Although the movies themselves may not be good, the Sinatra charm and charisma comes through. As far as songs, I love his version of "Memories of You." The voice on "your face beams, IN my dreams..." still sends shivers up my spine. And EVERY Phillies fan owes a debt to Sinatra singing High Hopes, which, in turn, gave us Harry Kalas singing High Hopes. allegheny
