Clothes make the man and the suit makes the superhero.

One of the many disappointments of Green Lantern is Ryan Reynolds' Lanternsuit, a CGI-unitard superimposed over his (mostly) nekkid body, more Cirque de Soleil than Superhero. Lacks the mystery of of the Batsuit, the Transformers chic of the Iron Man rig, and the cape-and-tights beefcake of Superman's outfit.

Got me thinking: Which are the most effective Super suits?

And for the best analysis of what accessory a superhero does not need, here's a link to Edna E. Mode's "No Capes" monologue from The Incredibles.

Your thoughts?

Well, see, coming from a different perspective that Superheroes can be either gender -- the Catwoman suit from the original Batman TV show, Emma Peel/Diana Rigg's action outfits in the Avengers and The Bride/Uma Thurman's yellow leather jump suit in Kill Bill 1 and 2 are my favorites. Throw in Xena Warrior Princess who I much prefer over Wonder Woman in terms of fashion, accessories and general athletic ability.

What a superhero doesn't need reminded me of that scene in the TV show "Lois & Clark" when K. Callan (Mrs. Kent) and Dean Cain (Clark) are designing the Superman suit. He asks if she thinks he needs a mask, and she replies with words to the effect of "Wearing that suit nobody will be looking at your face. They don't call them 'tights' for nothing." The look that went with the line was rather un-motherly.

The grey Iron Man armor that Robert Downy/Tony Stark builds in the first movie to escape the cave is effective and more believable than the red and gold version that follows later. But the most effective outfit has to be Bruce Banner's pants which expand he becomes the Hulk.

Watchmen is worth mentioning. But Superman and Spiderman are both good. Mostly these things look better in pen-and-ink form, however, e.g., Batman and legions of others. I thought the Spirit looked good on screen, although it was a come-down from the original comics. My favorite might just be Dr. Strange.
