Did You Watch the Oscars? Or aren't you into Hollywood's night of self-congratulation? If you did, why? If not, why not?

Verdict on host Hugh Jackman? Loved when he credited Kate Winslet's range as an English actress who played a German and got an Oscar nomination, "Whereas I, an Australian who played an Australia in "Australia" only got a gig hosting this show.

Hated the Baz Luhrmann directed musical medley that looked like an outtake from "Hgh School Musical."

Loved Seth Rogen and James Franco reprising their "Pineapple Express" stoners and laughing at clips from the years most serious films.

Was moved by actors paying tribute to the acting nominees, which produced the effect of honoring the contenders and not just celebrating the winners.

Should the Oscars show how many votes each actor got, as in a political election?

Your thoughts?

For a change the show was actually entertaining.....Wolverine and the produciton numbers were great. To many boring speeches....and I want to thank my mother, my siter. blah,. blah, blah etc.....and if any of them were really thankfull why did they need notes to remember who helped theem...that is so bogus...and who needed Bill Mahre to pitch his totally unrecoginized, socailly irrelevnt film or Sean Penn's weak attempt at politices.....Why do Hollywood types think that making money at "play acting" gives them any expertise in the real world.....If they were truly commited to society how about if they use their vast sums to bail out cities, foundations, charites.....oh you mean they would not have 4 houses and a boat and a plane and a place in Europe....They are so selfish, self centered and bogus

Sean Penn is a hack and a tool! He stole the Oscar from Mickey Rourke the same way he stole it from both Johnny Depp and Bill Murray a few years ago. I don't know what he does to the voters, but, to quote Julia Roberts, "Since I don't have brains or a law degree, I just performed sexual favors; 634 blowj*bs in 2 weeks...and I'm really quite tired."

Hugh Jackman seems like an amiable guy who truly loves show biz. Those were pluses. On the other hand, the musical numbers were dire. Ben Stiller's bit irritated me a lot. There's a time and a place, and this was neither. Plus, if you tell a joke, you need a punchline. The "In Memoriam" was botched completely for the home viewer. (And Queen Latifah's vocal range stops about an octave below the high notes in "I'll Be Seeing You," I regret to say.) The former winners presenting made me profoundly uncomfortable. Someone said it was like SCTV's Sammy Maudlin show, and that might be why. What did I like? I liked the speech from the woman who won Best Documentary Short, and I liked Anne Hathaway's "Yeah!" when Kate Winslet wonslet. That's about it. I was glad that I DVR'd it, so I could whoosh through the rough patches, and I was sad that I was glad.

I am often disgusted watching the overly elaborate, indulgent display of self-congratulations, but I still watch it. I justify this because sometimes the show is actually entertaining. Hugh Jackman's opening number was enjoyable, and I did laugh at Ben Stiller's impersonation of Joaquin Phoenix (probably the most ridiculous Letterman I've ever seen). I guess I try to judge the Oscars as a show because essentially, it is just another Hollywood show. As always though, the show was way too long. This year felt even longer with the individual tributes to all of the nominees. I had mixed feelings about this new format because at times (like when Shirley Maclaine spoke about Anne Hathaway) it was well-deserved and appreciated, but often it was just overdone, impersonal, and a bit awkward. I also hoped that Mickey Rourke would win, he was so great in The Wrestler and I was waiting all night just to see what he would say in his acceptance speech.

I'm just sharing that Sean Penn is really creeping me: and that's just the photo up there! I can't imagine why he's got the rep he does...although gotta love him for going to NOLA.

Hey, Michelina: As Penn himself said when accepting his Oscar: "I know how hard I make it for you to appreciate me." For such a dour and serious fellow, he's a very gifted comedian (see "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Sweet and Lowdown," and passages of his Oscar-winning performance in "Milk"). I agree that the picture above does make him look like a loser in the Johnny Cash wannabe contest.
