Not many actors make the leap from small screen to big screen. Yet Katherine Heigl, that double dip of praline who won a supporting actress Emmy for Grey's Anatomy a few years back but was snubbed today when nominations were announced, is prospering as a movie star. Her first two films as a lead, Knocked Up and 27 Dresses, were huge successes. And there's every reason to think she'll go three-for-three with The Ugly Truth, the R-rated rom-com co-starring Gerard Butler, opening next Friday. From the looks of the trailers, The Ugly Truth recalls the pleasant Ashley Judd/Hugh Jackman vehicle, Someone Like You.
Your thoughts on Heigl ? On why she may be faring better on the big screen than the small? (On the small screen, gestures have to be a little larger in order to register while on the big screen, which is more microscopic, actors have to dial it down.) Other actors who made the successful transition? Denzel Washington and Johnny Depp. Jennifer Aniston and Kathleen Turner. James Garner and Sally Field. Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood.
Tom Hanks, Ron Howard come to mind. KarenA
Carrie: Not sure I'd call Jennifer Aniston a succesful transition just yet. As for Heigl, I don't think she's that talented...I think she's just the Julianna Margulies of her hospital show, the lone looker in a sea of character actors and overlapping subplots. That's a little bit how I feel about "Knocked Up" also, that as Apatow's breakout film, any actress cast in that part would've worked. "The Ugly Truth" will be a better test, since judging by "P.S. I Love You", Gerard Butler is no King Leonidas of romantic comedy, and Heigl may have to carry the load. Thanks, Steve F. chrissdad
I am not very impressed with her. Sure she was good in "Knocked Up", but I need to see more of her. For every George Clooney or John Travolta, there's several David Carusos. Paul B
Carrie- I can't believe the last two sexist comments, not just about Katherine Heigl but also Jennifer Aniston and Julianna Margulies - all of them very competent, underrated actresses in my opinion. People are forever putting down Aniston, who is a most companionable actress and has a very fascinating filmmography. (Check it out, guys.) Margulies is an incredibly attractive, desirable woman who should have transitioned more successfully to the big screen by now. (Does Meryl Streep have to play in EVERYTHING?) Margulies has it all. Katherine Heigl? What a voice! Sexy as hell and she knows how to use it. Her line readings are among the best. Alas, seems there is still a lingering prejudice about people who come from TV, especially towards the women from the medium. They've become the easy targets of cads. Pash
KarenA: Tom Hanks, yes, but Ronny Howard was always bi-format: he was in "Hole in the Head" and "The Music Man" at the same time he played Opie. And Pash: Agree about Aniston, who was surprising in "The Good Girl," "Other People's Money" and "The Object of My Affection," playing against her looks and her perkiness. And good golly, Heigl looks like a goddess and clowns like Lucille Ball -- isn't that an unbeatable combo? carrierickey
Two errors in my last post...Aniston was in "Friends With Money," not "Other People's Money" and Ronny Howard was in "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," not "A Hole in the Head." Sorry I spazzed out. carrierickey
