National Geographic special explores color in age of dinosaurs

Scientists announced last week they'd found a way to detect pigments in fossil birds. National Geographic airs a special on their work tonight.

As I reported last week, a team that included researchers from Penn managed to detect traces of pigment in fossil birds that date back more than 100 million years. The technique they used might help them add color not only to ancient birds but to dinosaurs and other long-extinct creatures.

Paleontologist Phillip Manning, who is spending this year on sabbatical at Penn, will explain all this on the National Geographic Channel. The show, "Jurassic C.S.I.: In Living Color" premieres tonight (July 7) at 10 p.m. Manning will host the show, which is part of a series of six that will continue in August.
