What Was the Designer Thinking When He Dreamed up the Human Body?

a reaction to creationist claim that the body is too perfect to have evolved.

I just finished the long drive back from Penn State, where I picked up a number of new ideas for evolution columns. I also spoke to a class in science for non-majors. I discussed science writing and critical thinking. The students asked great questions and gave me some new insights into the real problem with science journalism. I'll blog about it tomorrow when I'm more awake.

In the meantime, I wanted to share this email from a reader:

"I'm sure you get this all the time, but,
if you were a doctor and saw all the complexities
of each organ inside a persons body, no one
would believe that this came from evolution. I think Darwin recanted on his deathbed."

It's interesting that the very first sentence shows faulty assumptions. He's sure I "get this all the time" but this is the first time I've gotten this particular sentiment - especially the part about Darwin recanting.

My question in return is this: If God created the human body, why did He put the sewer right through the playground? What was He thinking? (I wasn't the first to think of this, but it seemed to fit here).

I'd also like to hear the creationist explanation for male nipples. Any good ideas out there?

Speaking of intelligent design, I've been promised that Philly.com is going to stop classifying this column and blog as "health" and put it under "news". They might even create a separate tab for science. Now that would be some intelligent design.
