Special Olympic correspondent: Stephen Colbert



How do you cover the Olympics when NBC won’t allow you to show highlights? Leave it to Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert to find a way.

Necessity begat one mother of invention as Colbert recreated what for many people was the athletic apex of the Summer Games in London so far: 16-year-old McKayla Maroney’s breathtaking vault for the women’s gymnastic team. Let’s go to the videotape.

So many great lines in there, including his observation: “of course the actual gymnasts are smaller than this doll.”

And after all the bombast and hyperbole coming out of London (e.g., swim analyst Rowdy Gaines: “Never underestimate the heart of a champion”), Colbert successfully identified the very essence of the Olympic spirit: “Making little foreign girls cry.”
